Yep its been cold in parts of Canada this winter

Ron, It's so warm down here in the NonTropical NW tip than when I went for a motorcycle ride yesterday (New Years Day 2018) I had to stop and take a swim. But before I got into the water my brain got unfroze, I came to my senses and just held the towels and blankets for those who were suffering from the near heat exhaustion of only 35F and 38 degree water. WOW, that was a close call

Merry and I took our Tomcat out for a couple of dives in the Santa Monica Bay yesterday. It was so cold that I almost considered wearing long pants. We had a heat wave last month but it only got to 67° yesterday. Brrr.

I’m visiting family in Calgary Alberta and the other day it was -42 Celcius with windchill! Up to 0 today what a difference. Next year Mexico!

-35C here on the ranch in Alberta on New Years eve. Today it warmed up enough that I had to take my tuque and gloves off while weaning bison calves. Still too much ice to take the C-Dory out.

Its essentially been 15 degrees or colder for the past 10 days in Boston. No improvement in sight either. Getting 5-8 inches of snow on Thursday. COL (crying out loud).

Most of December has been colder than normal for us too, with no end in sight. We've hit -37F straight temperature so far. We could use a little global warming, at least locally.

COLD WEATHER IN THE USA

60 ABOVE ZERO
Floridians turn the heat on. People in the Midwest plant gardens.

50 ABOVE ZERO
Californians shiver uncontrollably. Midwesterners sunbathe.

40 ABOVE ZERO
Italian and English cars won't start. People in the Midwest drive with the windows down.

32 ABOVE ZERO
Distilled water freezes. Lake Michigan's water gets thicker.

20 ABOVE ZERO
Texans don coats, thermal underwear, gloves and hats. Michiganders throw on a flannel shirt.

15 ABOVE ZERO
New York landlords finally turn on the heat. People in the Midwest have the last cookout before it turns cold.

ZERO
People in Miami die or return to Cuba. Midwesterners close the windows.

10 BELOW ZERO
Californians go to Mexico. People in Wisconsin get out their Winter coats.

25 BELOW ZERO
Hollywood disintegrates. Girl Scouts in the Midwest sell cookies door to door.

40 BELOW ZERO
Washington, DC runs out of hot air. People in the Midwest let their dogs sleep inside.

100 BELOW ZERO
Santa Claus abandons the North Pole. New Englanders get frustrated because "the cah won't staaht, betta staaht a faah."

275 BELOW ZERO
All atomic motion stops (Absolute zero on the Kelvin scale). People in the Midwest finally stop saying "cold 'nuff for ya?"

500 BELOW ZERO
Hell freezes over. No one in Michigan is surprised because it explains why the Detroit Lions won the Super Bowl.

Aye.

Ain't that the truth Foggy! lol.

Jason, here in your sister city, Stoughton, WI, we've been double didgets below zero a few nights and barely positive single didgets during the day. And we've probably only seen about 4" total snow fall since the season started. Looked to be a brown Christmas, but got the first few inches of white stuff the day before.... Season's like this make me want to move south. Except that the south had snow before we did this year... Colby

Hey Peter, I got one for you.

How many folks here know what a tuque is? :?

I grew up in Tuque Country and can help translate for those of the "Southerly Land"

Try knit stocking cap, or watch cap.

Bet those bison calves are fun to watch. Stay warm.

.... it was -42 Celcius with windchill....
Now, this is one of my hot buttons these days......windchill pretty much don't mean shit!

Actually, it does mean something: windchill is what air feels like on bare skin if there were no wind. That is, -10° windchill could actually be +15° with some wind. Not many of us go out stark naked on cold days and nights. Windchills can be useful if you know at what temperature frost bite occurs on uncovered faces, fingers, etc, but most folks have no idea about frost bite temperatures.

Why does it bug me? Because these days many in the news media report windchills only.......I suspect because the number is lower and sounds more dramatic. It is so misleading. Often reporters don't even mention if they are quoting actual air temps or windchills, so you don't know. Some will report both, but air temps and wind speed would be more useful.

Even more insidious are the millions of folks who actually believe that somehow, in spite of physics, wind actually causes air temperature to lower (as measured with a thermometer); in fact, if moving air did anything to air temperatures, it would raise them ever so slightly. Thermometers could care less how hard the wind is blowing.

If you wear clothes, especially a wind proof jacket, windchills pretty much mean nothing. Not that wind doesn't make clothing less effective, but please just give me air temps and wind speed. I can figure out the rest!

At most every CBGT that I have been at the discussion comes up on winterizing C-Dorys. When they asked what I do, I just grin and say my home is in Central Florida. No need to winterize. That's why I moved from Wisconsin. Well...... I want you to feel my pain, this morning the air got down to 28 degrees! I had to put heat lamps in the C-Otter to keep the water lines from freezing like the hose I left laying out! Its going to be below freezing the next couple of nights.

Seriously.....stay warm up there in the frozen tundra.
