winter boat plans

Still have not put the boat away for the season.

1. Looking at replacing the Radar post (Scan Strut -- aluminum with powder coat that is peeling) but have not decided on the replacement yet.
2. Considering adding some LED lights: scene and driving.
3. Will be replacing the Landing gear (trailer jack) on the trailer.
4. Looking at adding active AIS -( B series transponder), possibly as a stand alone system.
5. A river trip on the Columbia at some point.

Looking more at that seat, I was about ready to hit the add to cart button on my Amazon account. However, I'm wondering about that arm on the chair. Seems to me that might be hard to slide by when getting in the seat. Just out of curiosity, how tall are you? Also, looking at one of the other Tempress seats

I'm wondering if the NaviStyle High Back would be just as comfortable, but easier to slide in to? Colby

Hi Colby,

I actually really wanted the arm rests, and was glad to have found a seat that was comfortable and had also them.

I am 5'7", 160lbs. I don't have any problem getting in/out. The wedge installation on the helm helps some. The arms end a good ways back from the forward edge of the seat which also helps.

I would imagine the armless version would be just as comfortable given its the same manufacturer, but I guess there is no REAL way to tell without trying it out :?

breausaw - I will be making a separate short album for each project above. Will take a bit to get them started, tho, sorry. I have the pics, just have to get them all in there.

Didn't figure you'd be able to just go play with the 25. :wink: That helm seat with the arms looks good - would you be able to slide into it without the wedge at the steering wheel?

I'll be looking forward to seeing the other photos when you have time to get them posted.

Thanks Ray. Hm, at 6' and 210 lbs, that puts another 5" and 50 lbs to slide into the seat for me. ;-( I'll have to see if I can find a bit more information out on both seats. If I could do one thing right now to improve my boat, it would be with the seat issue! Colby

We have our project list pretty much finished, but have had a tough summer.
We lost our son earlier this summer & have decided a change of scenery is in order. One of our favorite places while cruising on our sailboat was La Paz, Mexico ( meaning "Peace" it is a town full of great people). So a winter there seems like a nice alternative to the Pacific Northwest.
We will launch at San Carlos (another nice town), cross the Sea of Cortez to Santa Rosalia & take a few weeks to cruise to La Paz for a very different holiday season. The change will be helpful.

On the other hand, I'm glad to read you'll be keeping your boat over the winter and taking her to LaPaz. I hope you will report back on that trip - I'm very intrigued by the combination of the C-Dory and cruising sort of like one would do on a "big" sailboat.

I hope the trip to LaPaz does bring you peace.

Replacing the SeaStar hydraulic helm on Discovery. Teleflex sent me a new stronger Pro model to try. Then off to Texas for the next 6 months, to beat the cold winters in Utah. The C-Dories are staying home. We have a flats boat for Texas fishing.

Would be nice to take the boat out in October but Alaska Marine weather is so unpredictable this time of year. You go out in nice weather and return to a snow covered icy ramp. Guy needs a set of chains in the wings just in case. If I get a permanent cover built over the boat pad perhaps I’ll extend my season but for now it’s put up the Man Cave and hunker down for the winter.

That's a neat suggestion. One seems to typically think of Florida, south Texas, or Baja, but... there is Alabama -- nifty! I had read your entry on that some time ago (while I was only dreaming of a C-Dory). Now I'll have to go read it again :thup

Hi Jim,

Yes, I think it would still be fine without the wedge, just an inch or so tighter from the bottom of the wheel to the thigh. Next weekend, I'll try to make some measurements of all of the seat-to-wheel-to-console dimensions and post them.

You are much too kind, BTW - I'm a nerdy hack who just wastes a lot of material, dollars, and time reworking things over and over until they look "acceptable" :? :?

Sounds like you have a great winter coming up. I've often daydreamed about taking a C-Dory to The Bahamas. I could jump in that azure water right now What a great place for such a shallow-drafted vessel. And the Apalachicola gathering seems legendary :thup

Since so many were asking about clearances with the Tempress helm seat, I took some measurements this weekend. All photos are in my album also.

I think all the photos are self-explanatory. All vertical clearances are with a 3/4" plywood riser under the seat!

The factory mounting holes lined up perfectly with those in the seat for clearance (just) at the back (galley). You can just make out the plywood riser underneath.















Hop this helps some!! Spent 4 hours in the seat this weekend and am very satisfied!
