Window Air Conditioner questions

I appreciate the ideas, folks. Joan is pretty pleased to this point... the temp is down over 16 degrees, the humidity in the cabin is WAY down! :thup :thup I tilted the unit to see how much water comes out and where it goes... it made a sloshing sound, but nothing came out... I just love surprises! Joan came up with a Rubbermaid bin that looks like a good fit. Now, I just have to find a good way to enclose the sides so it passes the "esthetics" test.

It's nice that we can exchange ideas like this... even about "the wet spot."

Best wishes,
Jim

hi jim,
as mentioned in my pm, i purchased a yard of heavy roofing rubber membrane to control the condensation run off. after cutting it down to size, i place it under the window unit and elevate the front of the unit so that all condensation runs out the window. when you pull the unit out for stowing, you will find some water but easily remedied by draining it in the sink.
several years ago when i was deciding how to deal with this ac thing i received good info from dr. bob. i look at the options and felt the window unit was easiest. if it breaks, throw it away and spend $88.00 to buy a new one. the roof mounted unit bothered me, because i just know as soon i cut the hole some manufacturer will come out with a unit that only takes a 6" hole rather than that 12" thing. also waiting for a lower, shorter, lighter roof mount to be built.
linda and i have enjoyed the ac and couldn't think how we would survive without it. tomorrow we're calling in sick and will be on the ohio river, the temperature tomorrow, 90's! hope my boss doesn't read c-brat!
best regards to all,
pat

Hey listen up buddy, You didn't say anything about there being a "test".

By the way is that there esthetics test have anything to do with how much streachy is left in my Bungie Cord?

Close, Mike... I originally thought it had something to do with the guy who knocks you out before an operation... but, again, I was wrong. 8)

But, it's cool. I think that makes me cool. Now, if I just looked cool.

Esthetics... also spelled aesthetics (according to the dictionary). Who knew?

Thanks for the compliment Charlie, us mid-coasters don't often here such kind words. Meeooow!

Yep, water comes out when you move it. I turned it off, lifted the front a bit so see if anything would come out... nope. Let it sit a while, just in case. Lifted it out... well, the carpet needed a rinse right in that spot. I put it in the bin and got another cup or so out of it. With the humidity today up around 147%, this thing pulled a LOT of water out of the air.

After a run in the morning, I'll put it back in so we can get some cleaning and loading done in the boat.

So far, so good. :D (Cue the Sanford & Son music :note :note :note )

That Frigidaire 5000 Btu air conditioner went on sale, as of July 9, at Lowes for 20% off making it $79.98.

There is now a box sitting in our front hallway in a black plastic garbage bag with a big blue bow on it waiting for Mim to get home!

Thanks for the heads up. I called Lowe's to see if they price protect and the young lady on the phone said yes... but I have to do it in person. Hope I can get back there (40 miles) while it's still on sale. Twenty bucks will buy lunch.

Joan was working in the boat today, organizing shelves and drawers... in cool comfort. :D I was working outside, changing oil and cleaning filters on the Honda generator and getting the dinghy outboard ready to go.

Getting close, now.

Best wishes,
Jim B.

Jim,
Where are you storing your generator when in use and when not being used? Is it secure so it won't fall or can't get stolen. I'm thinking of a cooler rack to hold mine and fuel. Also I think the fuel supply is only good for about three hours. Are you siphoning fuel from another container using the Honda back up can or pumping fuel in carefully when you run out?
Thanks
JB

I also have the Lowes Frigidaire 5000 BTU model. I found that puting a good piece of rope around the front of the unit makes getting it in and out of the window much easier. The rope goes through the enclosed channel on the bottom and ties on top.

Bought this model because it is the smallest size I could find and because it has mechanical rather than electronic controls thinking they will be more durable in the type of use we will give it.

Jeff,

My Honda 2000 runs most of the night on the economy setting on one tank of fuel.

Jim --

Re the price protect, my store shows the sale running from 7/9 to September if I recall correctly. It was not over any time soon.

Jeff - We keep the generator in a Rubbermaid Action Packer container; you can put a cable through the clips to lock it to the boat, if necessary. It's big enough to hold a couple containers of Kleen Heat and other misc stuff, too. When using the generator, we put it on top of the Action Packer and run a line between cleats and looped through the handle of the generator. We've used it in some slop, and it holds fine. If we are going to be away from the boat for any length of time, the generator goes into the cabin, out of sight. As mentioned, on Eco-mode, the Honda will run quite a while on the internal tank. With the Frigidaire only pulling 4.8 amps, it should go at least 6 hours.

Jim - regarding the price protect: we found that our local Lowe's stores don't have the Frigidaire unit on sale. Apparently in our hot climate, they don't feel the need to lower the price? Checking on-line, that same unit goes for $200 - go figure. :?

Wal-Mart had a sale on small microwaves - only $39 for a 700 watt unit. Of course, our local WM didn't have it in stock. We picked up a different unit, but didn't care for the way it fit in the space in the boat... so back it went. We may pick up something along the way. This is all part of our plan to "not take so much stuff."

This morning was probably my last sunrise cruise for a while. Got to get the packing done.

Cue the Rawhide theme...

Packing, packing packing... though my back is cracking.
Get that stuff all loaded, CRU-ZING.
Don't try to understand it, just tote, load, and pack it.
Soon we'll be living high and wide.

My heart's calculating, the water will be waiting.
Be waiting at the end of our drive.

Throttle up, throttle down, on the hook, toss a line,
throttle down, throttle up; CRU-ZING.
Cut it hard, turn the wheel, feel the fiberglass and steel,
throttle up... CRU-ZING.

Best wishes,
Jim

Where does the action packer live in your boat when underway and when you are using the genset?

Thanks,
Warren

P.S. We learned the lesson to "not take too much stuff" in Florida!

Very good composition Jim! Rawhide was one of my all time favorite TV shows.

...

Our boat came with the special Action Packer storage area... we call it: the cockpit. The generator sits on top of the A/P when we're using it.

It also sees use as a table.

Yoga Mats..... Not to really use...but to cut up and put under the AC to keep from scratching....to put in the little gunnel shelves to keep things from rattling..... and who knows what other things we can come up with for them. Shared with me from my Sister-In-Law.... "B" aboard GYPSY. They put about 400-550 motor hours a year on their boat runing up and down the Cumberland... and she can come up with some pretty neat ideas. I can not wait until my Brother Mike sells his business and retires from working 50-60 hours a week... just think how much boating they will do then.

Glad to see you are keeping cool Jim.

Now... I like that AC unit on the stern too...which allows you to hang out in the cockpit in the cool.... wihout the bugs...and heat.. hummm...

Headed out to the waters later today...I need a water fix.
