What would you like to see on the new C-Ranger R25 tug?

No, the Ranger factory is on Pacific Highway South (Hwy 99) in Kent, about 1000 yards away from the old C-dory factory (now Brand X) - I think the closest cross street is 260th, and it is a tad north of there.

Pat,

Is the Ranger factory the same location as the C-Dory factory, Auburn?

Thanks,
Julie

Where were they in the process of getting the cabin done? Still working on the plug, or was the mold made? Had they taken the hull out on the water for tests minus the cabin ? They said they were close to ready to doing that...Inquiring minds want to know!

OK. I got some pictures. I am not sure if they are anything new but I can send them to whomever may want them.

Well, I am not quite "savy" on this stuff but here is what I saw.
The hull was in one room of the plant and the cabin was in the other. The hull had the bow thruster installed and it looked like the propeller assembly (??) was in, swim step, etc. The cabin didn't have a door cut out or anything like that. It was still gray looking so it didn't have the nice, shiny fiberglass finish. Some wood was still showing on the sides so maybe it hadn't been glassed at all? She didn't say anything about having the hull in the water.
Very nice people there and my 4 year old thought it was pretty exciting stuff!

From this description, I deduce that they are still working on the plug (the wood is the giveaway) and have not made the mold, thanks.

Hi there, Russ on Sportner! 'Good to hear from a fellow 'waitee'...
My R25 prob won't be done til September, so I am anxious to hear how yours progesses thru the stages of building, equipping, etc..

I am hoping to be able to get up that way for the sea trials in May or so. Perhaps we'll meet.

Good luck and congrats on a fine boat to be, John

John, yes I will keep you posted as I learn of any progress of construction on the new boats. I e-mailed Jeff Messmer this morning asking to be notified as milestones occur. I hope to visit the factory sometime after the upper half is mated to the lower and fitting begins. I was told that sea trials were scheduled for April, assuming they have a completed boat. We look forward to owning this boat for the same reason you and so many other C-Dory owners do, it should be a seaworthy, trailerable boat that can be enjoyed for extended periods without the costs associated with owning a larger vessel. I've been fishing from a 20' Bayliner Trophy the last ten years in the Columbia River and the ocean just outside so I'm anxious to see how it fishes and handles crossing the bar. I'll keep you informed.

OK, Julie of Jeff and Julie emailed me 10 new factory pix last Friday, they are in the Daydream album under C-Ranger factory pix. Here is one that shows the current state of the plug pretty well:

John,

Hope you like the 25 as much as I'm enjoying the 21. Absolutely can't believe that little tug! 22 knots of wind, heavy chop, and not a problem. 9-10 knots easy, 10 nmpg. Cool niche boat. Anticipate shrimp season opening and Roger along to help pull and eat 'em.

Dusty

Dusty, did you buy one or are you mooching off of Boat Les? I'd say the last thing you need is another boat, but that's not true....

I don't know what the last thing you need is, hope I never find out.

Someone once asked me "Why is the thing you're looking for always in the last place you look?????". After thinking for awhile, I finally figured it out. Why would you keep looking after you found it!!

Which Roger?? I vote for Roger on Sensei to do the pulling and Roger on SeaDNA to do the eating. Will you have the Ranger at the Lopez gathering? The only thing that is preventing me from signing up for that is that it's the first day of shrimping and I don't know where to shrimp up there. Joyce won't let me miss a day of shrimping (its one of the things that she really loves coming along for). If the Duster will be at Lopez so I can get the inside knowledge on where to shrimp, I be there too!

Hey Roger,

If you'd like I can PM some coordinates for guaranteed shrimp catching! Not far from Lopez and early in the season should be limit time. Big Sensei Roger and I have had a lot of fun shrimping the area.

Dusty

Well, Dusty, I confess I have the pics of the R21 from Wefings and EQ on my Bookmarks and daydream over them between working all day. I really like the lines and low gunwales. If the 21 had just a bit more room to sleep in...

Another thing they used to say at Pappy's Marina Bar in Panama City was that a lifetime boater's first and last boats are usually small, simple and easy to handle.... to the R21 and the C-Dory 22 kind of fit that bill.

Alot of the places I like to boat are far from home, though, so a larger cabin seems nice... but the ease of trailering and roomy cockpit on the 21 are pretty enticing.

John

Yes,

Both the 21 Ranger and 22 CD are niche boats - different filing cabinets for sure. The 25 Ranger will be a beauty - and the 25 CD is great too. So MANY choices, so little time.

Fond memories of Wichita - spent a year there back in the dark ages when I went through the B-47 pilot upgrade school... no time to fish, dangit.

Dusty

Dusty- wow... some history there, I guess. While fishing in the immediate Wichita area is a bit mixed, many lakes are not far and, best of all, from Wichita it is easy to get almost any place. I do envy your being so close to the sea, key rivers, wilderness, fishing and wildlife areas! Post some pics of your R21 shrimping, fishing, crabbing ventures for us poor, land-lubbers.

John

Don't want to beat this topic to death, but it occured to me that the new C-Ranger 25, while being a fine cruiser, will be hard to fish from if you're into that. I know no one is going to buy this boat primarily as a fishing boat, but those who contemplate buying a CR-25 for cruising and who also fish should consider the following.

The C-Dorys would have a lot less climbing around to do than the C-Ranger 25, and possibly the CR-21.

One of the greaterst virtues of the CD-22 is the flat floor from helm to stern, which makes running back and forth a minimal task. This is one of the great virtues of this model: having a flat floor from helm to stern right on the very bottom of the boat. This is especially important to those who troll.

The CD-25 has a down-step when you enter the cabin, and vis-a-vis, but not a really difficult one. The raised cockpit is usually found to be a little less user friendly to those who have known the 22.

Many other cruisers and fishing boats require you to go through a set of multiple steps when going from the cockpit to the helm. You really notice this when climbing through lots of boats at a boat show.

These ups and downs make for a much longer, more tiring day. With the helm, cabin floor, and cockpit all at different levels, and some even requiring two or more steps up or down, fishing is like being on the stairclimber workout machine.

Of course, one remedy is to install a second helm station in the cockpit, but some of the problem still remains and we have an added expense in the process.

Just one more thing to consider,

Joe.
