Wallas Stove Problems?

Hello C-Brats,

My Wallas diesel stove has a larger/hotter burner on the left and a smaller/cooler one on the right. When the stove is on and turned to its hottest setting, should both burners glow bright red? The smaller burner does not glow at all (although it gets warm). The larger burner glows red but does not glow evenly all the way around. Brightest glow is at around the 7 o’clock position, no glow around 1, and moderate glow the rest of the way around. Maybe plugged jets? Maybe normal?

Any input would be appreciated. thanks :smiled

Congratulations! Your Wallas works!!

Everything you describe is normal. It is made to have one burner hotter, and the incomplete red ring is how mine is, too.

Same way the two I have owned work! Welcome to the world of pot juggling--I don't find it a problem, and Marie has accomidated (she would live to have 5 burners and two convection ovens--but settles for the Wallas over the alternatives).

The Wallas are a sophisticated drip pot burner, and the fuel may burn slightly irregularly--with the right burner being cooler.

I have never had the burner glow red , ever. should it?? if mine does not am i getting all the heat that I should. I have been cooking on it for three years. Its slow to boil water but does after a while.

The Wallas burner configuration is the ultimate in simplicity. There is really just one burner, above the steel combustion pot, on the left side. That's where you can occasionally see a red glow from the flame. The hot exhaust stream is then pulled to the right, horizontally, by the exhaust fan, and pushed out the side of the boat, via the flex exhaust tube. The right burner is just a circle etched into the glass cooking surface, heated by the exhaust, so will always be cooler than the left. Pretty neat setup.

My wallas is going back to scan marine, again.
Last time time I got it back it did not work at all!

Mike seems like a good dude, I am sure he will take care of it this
time.
Keep me in your prayers!

I guess the wallas stove is like the m16 of early vietnam era, you either swear by them, or you swear at them.

I am real pleased with our Wallas and at the time I was real fond of my
M-16 as well! Both will warm things up pretty good, require minimal maintenance and are a comfort to their owners! I don't remember exactly what we were burning in the M-16 but we are some of those radicals burning Kleen Heat in the Wallas! :thup

sending the wallas back to scan marine this week. THe new owner is trying to blame the klen heat fuel. i can hardly get him to talk about anything else. Ever time I state a problem he spends five minutes talking about the problems of kerosine use. I have not had problems with the fuel just getting it to light. once I get it to lite it runs great. Even thu I may not be getting enough heat, no red glow for me.

I've been burning kerosene since day one on Two Lucky Fish - and so far, never had a problem. It glows red - but I can't see it except at night with the lights turned low. It does take a long time to boil water, but heats the cabin just fine....

Well i got the wallas back from the shop, $250 dollars later. they wanted over $600 but decided , after some yelling by me , to warranty some of the parts. so friday I go to put it in. I hook up the fuel, exhaust and power no problem. I hit the on switch and the exhaust fan comes on, the fuel pump comes on just like it should and after a short wait the ignitor should come on. Instead it blows the 15 amp fuse on the main power lead coming from the battery switch. Ok I replace the fuse and hit the switch again, blown fuse again. I tried several combinations of turning the unit on but always got a blow fuse. I checked the power coming from the battery for high voltage but only got 12.65 volts. I can plug in the power to the unit and get power to the unit with out blowing a fuse ,but as soon as I hit the on switch the fuse blows again. Shot of a email and phone call to scan and susan will be dropping it off again.... if she does not toss it into the lake first.

I did learn one thing about the glow. Some units have a darker color top then others. I think people wanted to see the glow so they changed the color some what. You can not tell when the unit is off, only when it is on. So if your unit does not glow don't worry about it.

Next time I will go with a propane cook top and a under the counter heater with a blower. I will never have a wallas again even if they do get it working right.

Tom - I'm sure not trying to second guess anyone, but my Wallas and the few I know about have a 25a fuse between the battery and the power plug.

And when you do reinstall, wrap your big ol' lips around the end of the fuel tube and suck out a mouthful of fuel before you hook the connector. If the tube is empty, it might take a few start up/shut off cycles before it ignites. I know it sucks, but the fuel don't taste that bad. No smoking for a half hour or so afterward, though.

Although 12.65 volts is "normal" you might want to put the charger on, and leave it on--letting the voltage drop (as it may do when the ingniter comes on, will increase the current draw.)--you need to test the voltage when the glow plug is drawing the current....Your problem is most likely a low voltage when there is current draw, rather than high voltage.

My Wallas has a 15 amp fuse.

There are other ways of getting the fuel to the pump--which might be better on the lungs (I know we all do it)--a small suction bulb will work fine, or get the fuel siphoning--be sure that all fuel line connections are tight also.

tyboo tyboo, if sucking on the hose works then BLOWING on the air vent hose at the tank works better and does not taste as bad.

I did have the charger on the battery after the first blown fuse. Now its a blown fuse right away and not time to see whats going on. I even an a spare fan on the power lead that plugs in to the unit to make sure the problem was not happening beffore the unit. besides for $250 it had better work with not problems. I think that something got crossed. maybe in the combustion chamber, something hitting the glow plug and grounding it out.

got my wallas back today but have not had the chance to put it in. the glow plug had indeed shorted. In fact it blow apart in the chanber. they fixed it,i hope, and I will be puttingitin tomorrow. wish me luck.
