From what I have read on this site, deasil gives out a higher heat btu than kerosene on the Wallas. I presently use kerosene (no problems), if I switch to deasil, do you think I can just run down the kerosene to low and then top up with deasil, or do I need to flush the system clean before switching to deasil? If I need to flush, what is the procedure?

I talked with the Wallas guys at the boat show. You can switch and not worry about cleaning out before you use diesel or vis- a - versa. I do not know about which give out more BTU's.
 
For colder climates, regular diesel gets some kerosene mixed in... you shouldn't have any issue putting diesel in there with the kerosene.

We are still using Kleen Heat with our Wallas. Picked up two more containers before we left home. You can store it, easy to carry, and it doesn't smell (much).
 
Please be careful about posting fuel comments! This string of posts says nothing about what kind of Wallas device you are discussing.

Wallas builds two kinds of devices - those that burn diesel and those that burn kerosene. Burning kerosene in a diesel product will usually do no harm to the device. Burning diesel in a kerosene device WILL damage it very quickly.

Best advice: Burn diesel in diesel devices and burn kerosene in kerosene devices.

One last point: Diesel #1 and kerosene are NOT the same thing!

Good point Doug, thanks for the reminder.

However, with the boat being a 2009 Cruiser - I don't think there's much chance of it being anything other than a diesel unless the owner installed something non-standard himself. To my knowledge, only Wallas DU diesel units have been factory installed in C-Dorys.

I'm sure somebody will be along shortly to correct the above if I'm mistaken...
 
Yes, you are right Doug. I should have mentioned in my original post that my Wallas is the 85DU model and my manual says to use Diesel or Kerosene. My question was, can I mix the two if I want to change from one fuel to the other? Or do I have to empty the tank, flush the system, before changing to another fuel type? I presently use Kerosene and everything is working fine. But I have read reports that Diesel gives out a higher heat. Of course, my cautious nature says don't change anything if it's working fine!

C-Dory did install some model 800/220 stoves. These were intended only for use with kerosene. Diesel will take them out in short order!

Just remember; If your stove has a "D" in it's name, it burns diesel. If it doesn't, it burns kerosene.

Sorry for the late reply! You can mix fuels (kerosene, Klean Heet, diesel #1 or #2) in your tank to change from kerosene or Klean Heat to diesel without emptying the tank, IF it is a diesel Wallas product (95D, 85D, 86D, 87D, 3000D, 3000Dx, 30D, 40D, 22Dt, 30Dt or 40Dt). This assumes the fuels are clean and within their age limits.

Wallas now specifies the use of diesel fuel in all of their products with a "D" designation.

Let me see if I can resurrect this old thread.

The installer of my Wallas heater/stove filled the fuel tank with "Kerosene K-1" from Ace Hardware. It is also available from Home Depot. It works great, doesn't smell and seems to last almost FOREVER! It is very expensive compared to diesel fuel: >$10.00/gal. compared to <$2.00/gal. It uses so little that I hate to quibble about price, but saving a buck or two here and there is always a good thing! My question is: What could be the down side of using diesel instead of K-1? Smell, performance, required maintenance, other?

I believe the downside might be the ruination of your heater/stove. What model of Wallas do you have? If what you have is a Kerosene ("Paraffin") burner, it won't do well with diesel. Check with the folks at Scan Marine before you try it.
 
I've been wondering what "paraffin" was. I guess it's kerosene, paraffin in England English. Petrol is gasoline over there.

Thanks for clearing that us. I've been reading/rereading Hiscock's Cruising Under Sail and he uses the therm "paraffin'.

Borris, the Brits call Kerosene "Paraffin" ,and gasoline "petrol".

The D 85 series of Wallas Stoves are designed to run on Diesel--Most of the stoves in C Dories have been diesel stoves.

#2 Diesel is what most of us run in the trucks and boats.

#1 Diesel is closer to Kerosene, by being more refined, but is not Kerosene

Current Wallas Stoves designed for kerosene are the Wallas 90 T series.

I have run both "Liquid Candle" and "Clean Heat" in some of the older Wallas stoves I have owned. The current D 85 series has only seen diesel. Although Kerosene and fuel oil/#2 diesel are close, the Kerosene burns slightly hotter, and is more highly refined.

Maybe Scan will jump in and give a better answer.

Us diesel--and make sure it is fresh each year. I buy new diesel each season and put what ever old diesel I have in the tank into the diesel truck.

Is that K-1 the ACE version of Klean-Heat. I have used Klean-Heat in my Wallas since I started using it, (9 years now). and I it is working well. No smoke, no smell, and yes, it still works (Knocking firmly on my head -- the closest block of wood I could find.) I don't use it often, and always run the Wallas on High to start and to finish, at least 20 min on high at each end. No complaints.

Actually, it is "1-K"; my typo! Yes, it seems to be the same stuff.

K-1 is the range of my education, at least according to my wife after I tell a corny joke! :) (like this one).
