Verticle Sliding Window in Cabin Door

I know this thread appears somewhere, but .... I contacted Diamond/Sea-Glaze about upgrading to a vertical sliding window with screen in the cabin door. They said no problem - at $356.42 for the window and screen, $69 shipping, $50 crating fee, and $45 duty and brokerage, for a total of $520.44 (just dawned on me; I should have asked U.S. dollars or
Canadian dollars). Way too much. But, they said to contact the C-Dory factory, who gets a much better deal and of course, gets better pricing on bulk shipping etc. Maybe they would be willing to order some and give us a break on them.

I have ordered a Bomar Hatch Screen assembly from the factory and they did save me some big bucks. Maybe they would be willing to help out in this matter.

I sent an email to C-Dory and am awaiting a response. Is there anyone else out there interested if "the price is right"? Maybe if we committed to buying several, we could convince the factory to help us out.

Lastly, any of you that are "closer" to the people at the factory might put in a good word.

I know I can make a "screen door" out of Sunbrella and netting, but the sliding window would be so much easier and OEM looking.

Maybe I've got too much time on my hands.

if the price is right I would be intersted in making this convertion. I have always wandered why c-dory chosenot to have the sliding screen. It would make for better air flow and bug control on those hot days in the north west, both of them.

We had contacted the company, Diamond/Sea Glaze as well on August 1st to get a quote for a cabin door screen conversion. It is a lot of money but I think worth it. It will be interesting to see what the factory says and like Tom, we will also be interested. We also contacted Ocean Dynamics. They will also do the conversion and their price came out to just under 400.00 including shipping and handling. I had contacted the factory by email a little over 3 weeks ago now to ask about the Bomar hatch screen assembly but never heard back from them so I guess I will have to try again or phone.
John, if you could PM me and let me know what the hatch screen assembly was I would appreciate it.

John, I did the same thing as you a year or so ago, contacting Diamond Sea Glaze directly, and was similarly horrified at the cost. But if the cost could be brought down some, perhaps by the factory as you suggest, I would still be interested in investing in this modification. Having a screen back there would also greatly help in getting rid of cooking odors and steam.

I didn't know a conversion was possible - are there any photos available? :photo

I'd be interested in doing it over the winter - at a reasonable price.

Thanks Molly Brown and Crew--
I just ordered the Breeze Booster
Should be here in time for the Catalina trip. :thup

Would also be interested in the operable window for the door.

edit-- I placed the order for a 3-day delivery- been a week and it's not here. I canceled the order! They said it would be here by Wednesday- it's now Saturday.

Passing this along that Bret Reynolds from the factory has arranged for a discount for C-Brat members to buy this item direct from Diamond Sea Glaze ( Kim or Dave 1-800-770-0455).

Just to let you all know that Brett at C-Dory did in fact contact Diamond Sea-Glaze and they (Diamond Sea-Glaze) is extending all of us a 10% discount. The final quote in U.S. Dollars for the window and screen, including shipping, crating, and duty and brokerage is $491.79.

Many thanks to C-Dory and DSG for their consideration ... but at this point, still too rich for my blood. The price of the window is 320.82 but the extra $165.00 for the other is a bit much.

I am still persuing some other manufacturers in the States. One of the posts says Ocean Dynamics is willing to do one for $400.00. I want to see what they have to offer, as well as others.

My best to all of you. Any input you may have is always appreciated. Thanks again to the factory for listening. Now maybe if someone is going to Canada with a pickup truck and coming back to the States and had a couple of windows..........

if a person were to take their boat into Canada for some cruising, and just happened to purchase and install the window while there, could you get away with out having to pay the duty and brokerage fee? specially if you paid cash for the window.

The US allows an individual to bring in up to $800 in goods duty free each visit if you stay in Canada over 48 hours.

I would check with US customs first, though!

I would not think there would be any duty on the purchase because of NAFTA. The brokerage fee would apply if you are not brining it back yourself, because you are basically hiring someone to do the import paperwork. State taxes would apply if they are collected at the border.
My business is a short distance from the factory so I could pick up the window for anyone who like to make a weekend trip into Canada. I'll even help you install it in my driveway. That way no taxes, no border worry, no problem. Unfortunately thats not a lot of help to someone in Vermont. :D

We installed a Bomar hatch screen and shade for this season and it works like a dream. We ordered it over the internet and I think we found on the Bomar Web site.

I would love a screed and glass combo for the bulkhead door. I hope some one posts some pictures

OK boys and girls. Kudos to the C-Dory factory again. I got another email from Diamond Sea-Glaze and they said the factory contacted them again and asked them to "do better" for us regarding a sliding window for the cabin door.

Here it goes. If we order a minimum of 6 windows/screens, the cost will be $1653.22 plus shipping to one destination. This includes crating six windows and one duty and brokerage fee. I asked them about the brokerage fee and this is what Diamond Sea-Glaze is charged when they ship an order - the fee charged to them by a clearing house. It is charged per shipment. This then comes to about $275.00 per unit, plus shipping to one location. Then ..... whoever gets the shipment will have to pack and send to fellow Brats, adding that shipping cost. If as a ballpark figure we add, say, an extra $100 to cover shipping costs from Canada and to you, that would make the window $375 each. Do we have six interested indviduals?

The best individual price I got from the factory with the 10% discount, crated, shipped to you with duty and brokerage fee is $491.79. So, if we buy six, each of us will save about $116.00 (at minimum, because I think $100 per person for shipping may be high). (Total savings for the group would be close to $700 bucks) I would be willing to be the middle man in this endeavor - but I do not want to be stuck for 5 extra windows. I will be willing to repack the windows the best I can and UPS to each of the other individuals.

In any event, I think I am going to buy a window, one way or another. I figure I have a $50k boat and it will be the last one I buy. I might as well have it the way I want it.

Let me know if there are any takers. The quote is valid for 30 days.

My best to all

John,
Count us in.

Ours is a 2001 model year; I assume one size fits all.

PM me with any details you require as regards payment, etc.

Thanks for all your work on this issue.

I'm very interested but I'd like to hear what's involved in the installation -
Like when I remove the present window, am I installing a modular frame with the new sliding window in place? Is this an hour or two job that can be done with small hand tools? Is there a photo in any of the brat albums?
All that said, the price seems right. I sure could use a screened bulkhead door to hold off the green head flys in this neck of the country.

Thanks from us too for doing all the leg work. We haven't decided what we are doing yet but did Diamond Sea Glass give you any idea what the shipping would be for 6 windows. When I phoned them to inquire a few weeks back they said that they figured the shipping would be about 70.00 for one window.....? I wonder what 6 will cost. Then of course there would be the UPS shipping from you.
We will try to decide what way to go in the next few days.
Thanks again
Rick and Donna
