Venture 23 insulation

Dr. Bob,

I definitely did not mean to offend or question you. You have more knowledge about boats in your pinky then I will ever have and, although I have never had the privilege of meeting you, I have tremendous respect for you.

As a matter of fact, early on when I was investigating the plusses and minuses of C-Dory's you were kind enough to answer some of my queries via a PM in which I asked you for clarification on the ride of the boat. Your comments helped lead me to acquire our Venture 23'.

We did not buy our boat because of a reinforced roof. However; as I mentioned previously - per the factory when we bought it - it was one of the many attributes differing it from the 22'.

I was merely trying to add to the list of features (as I was informed by the factory) which one might consider when choosing between the two models.

If indeed I was misinformed by the factory back in 2008 I apologize for bringing it up.

Regards,
Dan Denver

Not that it matters all that much but after I got home I measured the thickness of the piece cut out of our roof for the air conditioner it measures 13/16" thick total with about 3/16 of an inch of fiberglass on topside about an 1/8 inch of fiberglass on what would be the inside. It has a grey composite core in the middle. Since ventures don't have any fiberglass separating the whole side window like a 22' or a 25 maybe they did / do reinforce the roof more as the fiberglass separating the two side windows on 22's and 25's would provide more support for the roof. Just a thought.

I have done as Bob suggests. It's a very easy job to cut soft 1/2 inch closed foam to fit. I did not glue mine in. Just cut to fit and it conforms and holds to locker edges. It is easily removed if needed. The vee berth will have the foam also. That is next. I am using 1/2 inch again. It won't be glued either. Just press fit and will be a place for Carolyn to pin up hangings for color. Kerri On is a 2011 cd22 and came with something sprayed on over the gelcoat. I had several cd owners tell me the boat was cooler and or warmer feeling than theirs. I have not seen condensation at all except right at the berth edge. Insulating has been an easy job and I expect cooler and warmer and also quieter. It's about a $100 job too so that's good. I don't know about the reinforcesd roof but I think the stock boat is plenty strong there. My roof is foam cored. The are plenty of albums showing people up there. I got Kerri On stuck in a car wash in Flagstaff and the roof was fine. The tires on the trailer needed deflating to get out. No structural damage anywhere. The scratch polished out ok too. Plenty beefy up there. George

I wonder if the Triton Marine folks offer insulation options for all their models. It would seem like a great idea if they don't currently do so. This was not an issue at our house since we purchased a Venture with insulation. I have to say after spending 60 or 70 k on a new boat and having to get into the do it your self mode to insulate the inside of your new toy would bring some unsolicitated questions from persons that I won't identify here. It would go something like this; why didn't you buy it with that stuff in it? How come they don't sell them like that? What do you mean it drips water on you? Lastly if Marinaut can do it why can't C-Dory?

Dave , our new 26 Venture [solid blue hull] that was supposed to be in the Seattle Show [long story] does in fact have the liner .The nice thing about Triton , is they will do whatever you want and do it well . It also has a Lonteak floor ,NovaKool fridge , Wallas 2 burner ,Windlass Spotlight and more . I am assembling a gallery for it and as soon as I get the pics in one place Ill share .

You can't go by what is poster on the C-Dory website, as that information is almost three years old and predates Sea Sport / Triton building the boats. We never could figure out what was going to come on the Venture series after Fluid closed.

The Fluid built Venture 23 was my favorite boat in the C-Dory line. The latest boats didn't look to have the features that made the Venture unique, so I woudl definately contact the local dealer or Triton to determine what really comes on the boat. Better yet, you may want to see one in person to determine if it's what you want.

I moved the pics I have into a Gallery
I order most of our ventures ,built like cruisers. We just get the foam core and wider boat but built with the standard feature of the cruiser . If we want to order the headliner, we do . Custom Airhead ?, no problem.Custom teak floor ?,no problem .Specific electrical system? no problem. It all about communication .

If I was on the market for one these boats I would wonder what comes standard and what you actually get for the base price. It's nice to know all of the options are available but, without a clear baseline of standard equipment it almost starts to look like a shell game. The older C-Dory info clearly stated standard items and available options. I think this was what Matt was pointing to as the factory was not clear as to what you were getting for the addtional dollars when compared to the 22' cruiser. No matter the market will make the call.

Hi Mary,

I see you live in Alameda, CA. In May, I'll be hauling the MARCIA JANE right past you on our way to the Delta gathering. If you would like to meet at a spot near the freeway, we'll be glad to show you a 2008 Venture with all the features of the interior that caused me to change my mind when I visited the factory. I was originally going to purchase a 25. Or, we live in Santa Maria and could show you the boat anytime. Marcia of the MARCIA JANE fell in love with the interior and I had to admit, I liked it as well even though I love to fish. Well, it hasn't been used enough for fishing and we have enjoyed going on the Delta Cruise and the Catalina gatherings. Let me know via E-mail or PM and we'll arrange a time.

Regards,

Kent

Good looking boat, Marc. I like the drawers where the aft port hanging locker was. The teak and holly look on the floor is nice! A couple questions, if you have time: with the fridge under the aft dinette seat, where is the water heater? It appears that the forward dinette seat is like the Barber Chair on the 22s - does it move back and forth?

The solid blue hull is sharp looking, but I think I prefer that "swooping stripe" that identifies it as a C-Dory (not that the look of the cabin doesn't ;)). A nice evolution of the brand. :thup

Best wishes,
Jim

Jim-

I agree with you, but I'll bet they gave it the solid hull for two reasons:

1.) They didn't want it to look like a C-Dory with the signature C-Dory hull/gunnel stripe, since it was a different, more expensive boat, and

2.) Remember back a couple of years ago at the boat shows where lots of the big luxury boats were displayed with dark blue hulls, which was both very trendy, and also made them look HUGE when you were walking down below and along side them, as opposed to the lighter, white traditional hulls? Better to make it look like a Cadillac than just another Chevrolet.

Both of these seek to set it apart from the C-Dory line, which is what they probably felt they had to do.

See any dolphins today to report to Pat about?

Jim I am arranging shipping to FL now . The boat is still in Ferndale .Gotta give Scott a call regarding the water heater placement . They have simplified the "Barber Chair" and the table setup . It works nicely . We will be bringing some C Dorys to Boat Shows along the Gulf this year . Trying to get some momentum back in new boat sales.
Joe, almost on the money with the blue hull . Had a certain Dealer in Wa. cooperated with us we would have had them in the show and you all could have had a field day commenting on how they looked and were appointed. It was to be a joint effort with us building the boats and Triton manning the space in S********T's booth and sharing the results . And I wanted to present a new face with colors ,features and such .
We thought about a "reticulated" C Dory color scheme. When Scott pulled them from the mold we thought they looked pretty good as solid color boats . If someone wanted the swoosh[sorry Nike] , its amazing what a little Awlgrip and a skilled applicator can do.

The only dolphins we'll be seeing for a while are on my computer - we'll be in the dry ol' desert for at least another month, visiting our daughter and son-in-law. I guess I could drive a couple hundred miles to the Sea of Cortez, but I don't see that in our plan. We may get to Lake Havasu next week to visit with some trailersailor friends (there is a gathering with over 150 boats registered). But, in the meantime, Pat is on his own... hey, I saw that he spent the weekend on the boat, so he is getting more C-Dory time in than we are right now.

Marc, sorry to hear that the dealer whose name starts with "S" and ends with "T" (fill in your own joke here) didn't come through to allow a C-Dory appearance at the Seattle Boat Show. Seems to me that a dealer such as that is a big ol' hindrance to the brand rather than a supporter. Too bad, 'cause there was nothing like our boats at the show. Guess that is an irrefutable indicator of where they stand on the brand, huh? What's that old saying... "With friends like this, who needs..." Well, you know. Kudos to you and the whole Wefings crew... Triton desperately needs a quality dealer like yourself to let folks know that there are options in the small pilothouse boat market.

As far as the swoopy stripe, that is cosmetics - it is the function and utility that makes these boats so unique. Nice to have options and a partnership between you and the factory to bring these new boats to the public.

Best wishes,
Jim
