The sailing around the world races, mostly have small diesel engines, to generate DC power and to give emergency propulsion. Conrad Colman; New Zealand and USA Citizen, living in Lorient France, is doing the race on a boat with no diesel engine. Instead he has a small electric motor, which will propel the boat, as well as generate power, to be stored in Li Ion batteries to run the lights, nav equipment, satellite link, and water maker.

Here is a video link about his boat from Scuttlebutt on line sailing magazine. Well worth the 8 1/2 minutes it takes to view.

Here is Conrad Colman's web site.. There will be tracking information and blogs along the way. I feel it is very interesting technology--solar, wind and towed generators have been used in the past races to some extent. But the combination of a small electric motor, which converts to power generator with partial opening of the prop, is unique. No idea how much all of this costs, but I suspect a bundle! (Probably sponsored cost.)
