I talked to my service dealer about upgrading my motor. I have a 2005 Honda 90 motor with 700 hours on it. The 2005 motor is carbureted. The dealer had ONE new Suzuki 90 in stock. Order times on Honda and Yamaha motors are four months plus. I got the motor with controls and nmea2000 cables for what a Yamaha or Honda motor alone would cost.

The deciding factor was what my Honda was worth. I sold it in one day for half the price of the Suzuki motor. I had nine other contacts regarding the Honda.

Reviews on the Suzuki are very good and the warranty is six years. I’ve decided that I will be keeping my Angler for the foreseeable future. The swap will occur next week.

It’s a crazy market out there. If you can find a new motor, it might be time to upgrade!
 
Interesting...do you mind sharing the prices? I have a 2006 Honda 90 that runs excellent, with only about 250 hours (previous owner hardly ever used her.) Curious what I could get for it to put towards a brand new motor.

If I may ask, if you have a motor with low hours and runs excellently, why do you want to replace it?
 
I made the move for several reasons... the new motor is significantly quieter, fuel injected, and piece of mind. The Angler 19 has an open back so less noise is a big plus! I do solo long trips and I don’t want to worry. And, I don’t pretend to be a “wrench”. I’m good with maintenance, but the thought of dealing with a field failure is a bit daunting. Not to say the Suzuki couldn’t have a problem...

I sold the Honda for $4,000, without the stainless prop. I will sell the prop separately. I’ll bet the Honda was about $4,000 back in 2005. The new Suzuki was $8,100, plus’s controls and swap labor.

It made sense to me since I’ll be keeping the boat.
 
I bought a 2020 Suzuki last spring for my whaler. In the fall we picked up our 2004 Cruiser w/ a 90hp honda same vintage w/ 870 hours. Ran great but I decided to swap it out w/ the new Suzuki. My plan was to put Honda on the whaler. The Whaler helm calls for a top mounted binacle and I thought I could finagle the side mount one in its place that the Honda had. It was not going to look pretty w/ a side mounted control and instead of ordering a top mount binacle I listed the old honda on market place. It sold within a few days for $5,000. w/ an aluminum prop and side mount controls. I will hang on to the whaler and look for an older 2-stroke to tool around in.

It was a random thought after reading Yakmandu's post. My engine runs great but it's only a matter of time before it won't. And I'd love to no longer have a carbureted motor. If the market is hot for used motors right now and I can get into something brand new for 5k, it may be worth considering.
 
Yakmandu, with that history, you need to pick up a lottery ticket. You did very well.

I would say that other reasons would include a carbureted engine vs EFI. Second is 17 amp alternator output vs 27 amp alternator output on The Suzuki.

Honda BF90D alternator output to the batteries is something like 35-40 amps.

Honda BF90D alternator output to the batteries is something like 35-40 amps.

A 2005 Honda BF90 wouldn't be a "D". My 2003 Honda BF90 "A" outputs 20A and charges more like 15A, the Honda BF90D outputs 44A and charges up to 40A.
 
I have a really hard time taking perfectly running motors off the boat and putting newer perfectly running motors on the boat.....still have honda 45s....yeah honda made 45s.....lol.....
 
SSilver, after the response I got on my for-sale listing, I was sorry I didn’t list it for more! I think your $5,000 price was great. I thought I was optimistic with my $4,000 price. The reason I shared my experience was to encourage anyone thinking of upgrading to not underestimate the value of their motor.

I also wanted to sell my motor before it was removed. It is worth more when you can demo it on your boat rather than looking at it on a skid! I took the buyer out and ran the motor and showed him everything was in working order. Sold on the first test ride!
 
That is awesome you were able to demonstrate yours. I had mine listed for 5200 and the guy said he would stop by the next afternoon as I was going away on friday. He bought his boat over w/out a motor and the plan was to bolt it up so he could get it home. I told him he could re-use his merc cables and would just need to use my controls. I ended up bolting the motor on for him and taking out his merc controls and started it on muffs in my driveway. He was ready to leave as soon as it was bolted on. He did not even ask to see or hear it running. The was the fastest motor swap I ever did about 2 hours in my driveway during lunch time. He said he was going to mail a some extra money for the help getting it on for him. I ended up giving him my old bolts too. Still haven't gotten any money I may reach out and ask about that haha.
