Underwater egress, Coast Guard Training

Reminds me of the Dilbert Dunker and Helo egress training I went thru with Naval Flight Training for Coast Guard Aviation! Less fun than it looks! ;-) Colby

Years ago I went through capsule training so I could drive a hydroplane. It was a very odd experience. We had to exit out the canopy once and out the emergency hatch once. It was a muscle memory thing for sure. Memorize what to do and where to move in what order. It was a challenge even knowing it was coming so I can't imagine going through the mental process after blowing over. I watched two people sustain pretty bad cuts and bruises when they panicked. I did fine but only after mentally going through it 15 times before they actually flipped me. Having water swallow you from above is a weird feeling.

I've many a ride in the 9D5 dunker. We used to have to do it every 4 years (for helicopter aircrew) but they changed it some years ago to a 6 year interval. Great fun.
