The largest lift lock in the world is now offering something new to small groups of world adventurers. 16 people will take a ride in a 36' voyageur canoe. Then a tour of all the inner workings of the lock. Then a 5 coarse meal prepared by a trio of local chefs and served on tables under the lift chamber!

The lock tenders all along the Trent-Severn were friendly and helpful. When we were there, we spent the night on the lock wall at Peterborough. When they were done for the day, one of the lock tenders stopped by our boat and gave us a newspaper. We visited for a bit about the lock, and he said that he had to run the lock through a full cycle each morning before taking any boats, then asked if I wanted to see inside while he was doing that... "Absolutely!"

The next morning, he gave me a tour of the controls on the lift lock, and said, "If you want to leave your camera with me, I'll get photos of you and your boat in the lock." We were the only boat in there on that first run.

A definite highlight of our time on the T-S.

The locks on the Snake River are 100' drops and much bigger. Maybe it's the largest lock on the Trent-Severn? Or maybe those are Canadian feet?

Regardless, I can't think of anyplace I'd rather not be for dinner than the bottom of an empty lock.

I don't proclaim to know the particulars, but the Peterborough Lift Lock may be the largest lift lock that uses differential weight in the water containments to operate the lift (it was billed as the largest lift lock in the world when we went through it). Regardless, it is the coolest lift lock we've ever been in. Friendliest lock tenders. Such a unique experience, being the only boat on their wall for the night, waking up to a dramatic foggy morning...

The canoe/dining experience would be fun, but having your own boat and traveling through there can't be beat.
 
The three gorges dam just opened so the Trent dam WAS the largest until the one in France opened a year or two again. Then the one in china opened the next year. Funny how one lift can be the biggest for so long, over a hundred years, then two more pop up in a short time span.

Remember as the news say's " its the biggest, most, largest, worst, fastest, longest, deadliest since the last biggest, most, largest, worst, fastest, longest, deadliest in history" Funny how that history just keeps moving along.
