Trim Tabs

Are trim tabs an essential component on CD 22 and 25s? I notice that all the new boats come with them and there's a mixed bag with the older ones. Does it depend on the year?

TIA

I always thought they should be standard equipment. I installed Bennett M-120s on our 2001 22 Cruiser and would not be without them. They make all the difference between a ride that will rattle your fillings loose and one that won't.

Depends on your definition of essential. If I had twin outboards, I'd get/use a pair of Permatrims instead. If one putts about off plane, I think tabs are essential - then again the cruiser is tippy and I'm not the lightest Brat by far, so the Jenny B lists. A lot at slow speed, moderately on low planing speeds and not at all if I'm charging around WOT.

Factory "standard" evolves and they really do listen to owners.

Thanks for your help guys. I reposted this over to the All C-Dorys thread since that probably where I should've put it to begin with.

Cheers

My particular take on trim tabs may be different than others but here goes.

We originally installed a Permatrim on our Suzuki 70hp engine and loved it. We repowered after the 1st season to a Suzuki DF90 hp without the Permatrim but with Bennett M120 Trim Tabs. IMHO, the trim tabs work ok for getting the bow down and work very well for lateral trim. We were just used to the instant response and adjustment that the Permatrim provides for adjusting the bow trim.

So, we added the Permatrim on the new engine and our preference for the Permatrim was confirmed. We still use the trim tabs to adjust the ballast but prefer to use the Permatrim for trimming the bow (and stern). In any case, whether it be TT's or a PT, having them on the boat really makes a difference when running through choppy water and serves to minimize pounding. Therefore, I would rather have TT's (or a PT) on a CD22 than not.

Hope this helps. And as noted above YMMV.

My 22 did not have trim tabs, my 25 does. I have just added a Permatrim on the 25. I think that all of the CD should have trim tabs.
