Trent Severn Canal

I wondered how much time one would plan on to do the Trent Severn canal justice.
And any stops that would be recommended. Just for future planning.

Hi there,

We took 17 days from Kingston to South Bay Cove Marina in Georgian Bay (in our Monk 36), but that included waiting for company to show up from Utah.

We loved everyplace we went, but the lift locks (Peterborough & Kirkfield) and the Big Chute railway were definitely highlights). Oh, and the chocolate factory in Campbellford.

You can check our blog to get a feel for the place.

Enjoy your trip.

A couple weeks minimum... we did the Erie Canal, Hudson River, NYC, and the Trent-Severn over a couple months. If I were doing it again, I would give more time to the Trent-Severn... lots of history and great towns along the Erie Canal, but we found the Trent-Severn to be more scenic. And, as Getzoid points out, the lift locks and Big Chute Railway were the highlight (and that's after doing the locks on the Erie).

Peterborough Lift Lock...

We spent the night at that lock. The next morning, the lock master brought us a local newspaper, then asked if we wanted a "tour" of operating the lock - absolutely!

The Big Chute Railway...

"That was fun, let's do it again!" 8)

Historic hand-operated locks along the Trent-Severn. Great towns to visit. Friendly people. :thup :thup

Definitely put it on the list and give it plenty of time.

Best wishes,
Jim

Thanks for your replies. I was trying to see if doing the North Channel and the Trent Severn made sense for us. I think I will just make it two separate trips. Always so nice to have good info from the folks who have been there and done that. Thanks Again

Gerry, I enjoyed your pictures and reading your blog - thanks!

Dave, sorry for the late response but I was unable to log in for a few months. Thanks to a new gmail account and Tybo's help I'm back :smiled .

A few Brats have sent me pm's the last couple of years inquiring about the Trent and I have been promising to start a thread outlining my experiences for them. I'm a bit of a procrastinator!! BUT, I will do it and include pictures in my album. In the meantime if you have questions don't hesitate to send me a pm.

Regards, Rob

Gerry, I really enjoyed you blog when I was contemplating the whole Great Loop thing. Still am, but it appears more and more difficult logistically for us these days, or for Patty and me to see eye to eye on how it might work. Doing it in one swell foop just isn't in the cards. But it is great to dream!

Take the cue from Will C. Just do it in chunks and don't rush it. We dreamed for 5 years before we went and are starting to dream again.

Thanks again for the replies. We are going to try and do the Trent Severn next summer along with the North Channel and over to the Michigan inland waterway for our next partial loop installment. No worries. We figure we can coast down the Mississippi portion when we get older.
