Transom Cap Issue

Oh! I thought your were talking about that button flap on the back of old time pajamas.

Did I see that type of arrangement on the back of some navy sailors pants?

Or am I just getting mixed up again, either/and/or top to bottom, front to back, fore and aft, or athwartships?

Joe. :teeth :thup

Yeh...the Navy bell bottoms flap was in the front--laced in the back. Used to see alot of those on the Long Beach Pike a long time ago! Looked pretty inconvient, but not as inconvient as if the flap would have been in the back!

For the record, in the '50's the issued wool dress blues were straight legged and had a zippered fly. They were folded inside out, with the inward crease along the side seams. Many, if not most, sailors also bought a set of tailor made dress blues, with bell bottoms, the thirteen button flap and inner lining colorfully decorated with embroidered dragons and such. The skin tight jumper had a zipper up one side. You carried your wallet in your waistband and your Luckys in your sock.

The uniforms I refered to were Navy Issue, WWII and a bit later--the Dragons etc came with occupation or mostly with Korea. The jumpers of that time were not zippered, but slip on. I had several given to me after WWII when I was diving at Catalina, and would come up almost blue after either clearing a boat's running gear from a mooring line, or anchor rode, or having retrieved a piece of Jewlery. Of course I didn't usually have a shirt with me, and chattering teeth got me more money ($10 was a lot of lawns to cut back then!, a cup of hot choclate and on several occasions one of the Navy Jumpers.

Hi Dr. Bob-Of course you are correct about different uniforms in different time frames. My dad's WW II dress blues were certainly "more salty" than my Korean era issue. To all, I apologize for hijacking this "Transom Cap" thread to discuss the thirteen button front flap on bell bottoms. It probably belongs in the "Forward Hatch' thread. o
