Thrusters on a c dory

Hi Brats, Richard here w/ the 19 foot (angler management) dory.
Just curious, Has anyone put thrusters on? I have bow and stern thrusters that came with the boat. I don't think I will be installing them. SS230 and st230 made by side shift. They seem like fun but I can't imagine them on such a small boat.
Anyone done this?????

This was discussed in the past some time ago. Some trolling motors have been used--which could be used as a thruster. But just not necessary. Sell them, and get some fuel money.

Thataway: Why did you mention trolling motors? Do you mean the hull is not able to accept a regular thruster?

I think a bow thruster would have been very useful on my old 25.

Because several C Brats have put trolling motors on the bow of their boats, and the trolling motor can be used as a bow thruster.

Putting a bow thruster, such as The Side Shift, and the one which is in an external pod, will make trailering very difficult. There is a high chance of damage to the external thruster if loading or deploying on a trailer at a launch ramp.

Although it might be possible to put a small bow thruster internal to a 25, the design of the boat and geometry of the bow do not lend well to this. Your Camano Troll, is designed specifically for a thruster--and the forefoot is quite different than a C Dory25. Also an inboard diesel single screw, small rudder, with a lot of windage is a boat which may benefit from a thruster, since it is more difficult to back.

I don't believe that the 25 needs a bow thruster. A few of the big outboard powered deep V's have put them in--but a smaller outboard powered can be pretty much placed where you want it with handling experience.

When I was looking at the bow thrusters on a Rosborough 246 in his yard, Marc mentioned that there is a company that puts bow thrusters on C-Dorys, I think he said the cost was about $2,500. I can tell you, thrusters WOULD have been useful in some of the locks, and possibly at several docks on the rivers, but I can imagine no use for them back in the San Juans or Gulf Islands, so we will save that money for Daydream's eventual re-power!

Due to the way our CD-22 bow falls off in a wind, I can think of many times a bow thruster would be handy getting into and out of narrow fairways and with the fixed piling docks common in the mid Atlantic region.

OR, you could save the money for adding bow thrusters and put twin outboards on. Moves the bow the same directions, (Port or Starboard), and gives the advantage of redundant duplicity on the transom. Could, should and would work on a CD25, and probably the Rossi 246 too. Sure, a company will put thrusters on if you want them too.... Who is paying who here? If they were paying me, I'd probably let them put a thruster on my 22, BUT that wouldn't make it more maneuverable than it is with twin OB's. (Just that I would have more $$$ for letting them do it)

The prime advantage to having twins on a 22, Superb low speed maneuvering.

Jason, Put twin kickers on the aft corners of the Camino, and you will be able to do the same thing
