The Cruising Adventures of Wild Blue and crew...

Jim-

If you have one made, make a single hole instead of the slot, and go with a heavier/thicker gauge metal, if it would fit OK.

It might be worth a call to the Raymarine technical rep to see if they've had trouble with that fitting, etc. He/she might even send you the part for free.

It's worth a try, and you're one of the most persuasive people I know.

Good Luck!

Joe. :teeth :thup

Hey Joe,

I had to talk to 4 people at Raymarine before anyone knew what part I was talking about. I tried to sweet talk the lady into just the piece I needed... she didn't much care. She did, however, tell me that she was going to put me into the... "pots cue."

"The WHAT?"

"Pots - you need pots."

Pretty sure I needed a metal bracket, not a cooking utensil... it took me a while, then, it came to me: I'm a mid-west boy in a Mexico-lite environment, and used to that accent. This was their NE office, but it finally dawned on me while I was on hold... pots = PARTS.

The woman in pots wasn't about to "break up a kit."

But, I tried. 8)

Best wishes,
Jim

Hey Jim,

thanks for being out there for us. Way out there in the front lines, my friend. Your efforts are appreciated, and I am going to go check my pots. Just in case I might need to add a couple of bigger washers or something to help bolster my $50 something "pot"

It's that time of year again. We have been away from the boat the last couple Christmas boat parades. After a sunrise run this morning...

Sunrise3e_006.jpg

... we went to work on decorating the boat.

Decorating1e.jpg

We always have artistic differences: One of us, and I'm not saying who she is, prefers "understated elegance"... pick a color scheme, and carry that through from front to back. The other of us, and I'm not saying who I am, is more the Clark Griswold type... pack that sucker with LOTS of lights - lights that dance and move, all colors, all styles, inflatable stuff, Jimmy Buffett Christmas carols blasting... it's a parade, for goodness sakes, tacky isn't just OK, it's the goal! As usual, we compromise: the bow and the sides are understated, the cockpit, stern, and top of the cabin have a bit more... pizazz.

Well, when darkness fell, so did my hopes...

Lights1e.jpg

What is that thing on top? It's a helicopter with Santa and a snowman. It looked good in the daylight... well, you could tell it was a helicopter. In the dark, it looks like ... um... well, kinda like an old Austin American, without the headlights. The rotor flopped in the wind. Not the look I was hoping for.

So, off with the inflatable, and we'll try for Plan B tomorrow night...

Happy Holidays,

Whew! Blew like stink for the Lighted Boat Parade tonight. Not a lot of boats participating, probably because of the windy conditions, but we had a fun (and challenging) evening. Wild Blue took second place in our category (Power Boats 19 to 29 feet) - we received gift certificates (we'll be eating good for a while), a small charcoal BBQ, a bottle of champagne, a gift bag from the local book store (I had to check to see if my book was in there - nope 8) ), a bunch of t-shirts, and a framed plaque.

Lots of people along the parade route - plenty of hooting and hollering.

The lights all held up, in spite of the wind.

Here's our "official" image...

WBLightsCardE.jpg

I'll leave the lights on for one more night, then off they come so we can get out and about on the boat again.

Happy Holidays,
Jim B.

We're with you, Jim -- the more glitz the better. WildBlue looks fabulous !! We would have given you FIRST place. But if memory serves, when you did win 1st place you got an ice chest -- to put YOUR own food in. You may be ahead, after all, with the restaurant gift certificates !!

Good Job guys. You make us C-Brats proud.
Bob and Betsy

Thanks, Bob, Betsy, and Bill,

It's a lot of work, but we had fun. My neck and shoulders are aching this morning, from craning to keep an eye on all the boats swirling around in the small harbor area prior to judging, and then trying to see over the lights on our own bow along the parade route. We've learned to not put white lights on the bow :disgust , and set up the bow lights on a separate circuit that we can unplug from the helm. With all the wind last night, there was a lot of dodging and rotating.

We do use that cooler from a few years ago - not for ice, but it's great storage and another place to sit. When we got first place in the small sailboat division years ago, we received $100 cash and some prizes. There were no "big" prizes this year, but lots of $25 gift certificates, overnight stays in hotels on the beach, etc, booze and champagne, etc.

Here's the winner in our class...

Parade3e.jpg

Yes, all the photos we took look like that. We were moving, they were moving, and the shutter speeds had to be kinda slow; definitely easier to get photos when you are on shore and not trying to steer a boat. 8)

A few more images...

And the grand prize winner...

Parade6e.jpg

Not easy to see in that image, but the red lighted boat in the front is towing Santa's sleigh behind. I was thinking, "That's going to be a real challenge in this wind," but the boat doing the towing is one of the parasail operators... and, they left Santa's sleigh behind when we went into open water for the parade route. It was really well done. One of the commercial operators set off fireworks as they pulled up in front of the judging area. The large excursion boats were packed with people - smart: take paying passengers IN the parade.

Even the Coast Guard boat leading the parade was decorated. I really appreciated their sense of humor - the gift packages on top of the boat had yellow Caution tape on there as the ribbon. And one of the CG guys had green makeup on and was dressed as the Grinch.

CGboatE.jpg

I took that photo before the parade started. Check out the palm trees in the background to give you an idea of the wind. Oh, and look at the white lights on their boat around the windshield... and, they put the Santa on top over their rotating spotlight - good thing they had a handheld spotlight onboard.

Wild Blue found some skinny water just outside the small channel on the way home after the awards. In the true Christmas spirit, there was the exchange of pleasantries, like "Any idea where the channel is, dumas?" :xnaughty No harm, no foul, we all survived, one of us said the annual, "I am NOT doing that again - it's too much work!" salutation.

The toughest part of the evening was the 2 1/2 mile slog across the Laguna in a small channel with the wind and waves on the beam. The funniest part of the evening was when the guy leading the crew on the parasail boat went up to get his prizes... you would have thought he won the Academy Award! :xlol

Tomorrow, the lights come off... and I think that may be more work than putting them up - I put a gazillion tie-wraps on there to try to keep everything in place. The star on top of Wild Blue wasn't as tacky as a big ol' inflatable display, but it allowed the wind to blow through it and didn't come apart.

Happy Holidays! :xlol

Lights off, lights on...

Wild Blue is sans-lights once again; some of them made their way to the deck on the back of the house.

Hard to imagine, but some folks aren't into boats or lighted boat parades. Tonight on our island was the Lighted Golf Cart Parade - they had a bunch, and I think they were having more fun than the boat drivers.

It has been a scant 4 years since I had to replace a wiper motor. As I recall last time, it was a 3 day project with bloody knuckles, and mass usage of swear words. Much easier this time... I knew where to look for the set screws on the wiper arm, and after only a half hour of trying to pull the arm off, I just went after the wiper motor shaft with a Sawzall... much faster than the last time when I tried using a hacksaw and burned up a Dremel getting that shaft cut. My replacement Dremel has the 90º grip and doesn't fit under the brow for a good cut angle. Sawzall good, ugh, ugh.

Copious amounts of WD-40 and working at it with vice grips, and the end of the shaft still won't come out of the wiper arm. So, to complete this little job, I need to order another pantographic wiper arm.

The replacement of the linking arm connecting the hydraulic steering and the autopilot was straightforward. When I took the old parts off, I saw that one of the shoulder washers (plastic) was broken... very likely that the broken section put extra pressure on that linking arm, causing it to flex and break. So, it was a good thing that "the kit" came with that stuff. Still, $50 + shipping + tax seems high for that linking arm, a few nyloc nuts, some other small bits, and a couple hose clamps.

On the bright side, it was a lovely day to work outside on the boat... OK, it would have been an even better day to be out cruising on the boat... upper 60s (a little shy of normal), mostly sunny (until late afternoon) and very little wind (one in a row!).

Best wishes,
Jim B.

A hot time...

(no, I'm not talking about "date night" with the Blonde)

On another thread, there was a discussion of a recall of flares from Orion. Our 12 gauge flares fall under that recall (handhelds are fine). I e-mailed the info along with a photo to Orion customer service; I quickly received a return e-mail that said they are planning replacement shipments the week of the 19th. We have carried Orion signals on our boats for years; only fired them off for training (expired flares). One more bit of peace of mind that you hope to not have to use.

Best wishes,
Jim B.

The Orion flares showed up today! :thup Outstanding follow-up from the recall on the flares. Nice to see a company take care of a situation in a stand-up manner.

And, for those who have been waiting to hear about the final outcome of the wiper motor... I had to order another pantagraphic arm, and it just came in today. Not the fault of the place I found it (Sailboatowners.com) - they shipped right away. It went out Priority Mail and only took 10 days to get from WA to TX.

Our daughter and son-in-law's flight was delayed by two hours, so I figured we had time to install the arm and blade. The upside of the pantagraphic arm is that it definitely wipes more square inches than a straight arm. The downside: each little adjustment you make on one side affects the other. I've actually gotten reasonably proficient at sighting it to see where it's hitting and what adjustments need to be made... but, it is definitely a two-person job. Check the shaft on the motor to see where the arm parks (right or left side), test fit the two adjustments... then fine tune them... usually only a thousand times or so for me. Kidding. After a few times, lock it down - a compression screw on one side and a clip on the other.

The weather always turns crappy when our kid visits, and this time is shaping up as per usual - it is beautiful right now: sunny, low humidity, temp around 70º, and the wind isn't howling. Her plane should be in in a couple hours, so it will be after sunset... and that will likely be the last sun we will see for the next few days.

But, seeing our little girl and her husband makes me feel warm all over. We'll do some dolphin watching while they're here. :hot

Best wishes and Happy Holidays,
Jim

Ah, Merv, contrary to what some folks think, I take no joy in rubbing in anything to do with weather. I spent many years in the frozen northland, AND I believe in karma. I feel for you folks in the PNW who are taking an unusual beating.

We are land traveling right now, and will be flying up your way for the boat show. Just two nights ago while crossing west Texas, we woke up to 28º!! :crook It was clear and a million, so we didn't have to deal with any precip.

Setting up the RV just now, it is shirt sleeve weather... that's our goal: try to stay where the weather is comfortable. We know our time here in the desert will be chilly nights and mornings, comfortable afternoons. I am missing the boat once again, but really looking forward to the Seattle Boat Show.

Stay warm, don't get overworked shoveling (makes my back hurt just thinking about it).

Best wishes,
Jim

Jim,

Fish On!

Yup, I know where you are at thanks to your blog which keeps me smiling.
Sorry we will probably miss you at the Boat Show but I don't think we can make it this year. Even more sorry to miss the brewery bash, that will be a hoot and a half.

Drive safe.
