Thanks Jim,

Seven PM and it just dropped to 15 degrees! But is was Sunny in Sunny Sequim today. Fortunately it was a balmy 21 while I was using the snowblower. I did have some FD Deer watching as I worked.

Jim,

It's eight PM and 12 degrees. Joe says he's packing up and heading your way :smiled

Let's see... if he drives like hell, you could probably make it in 4 long days. Just in time for Christmas... we'll put out a couple extra stockings! :D

Roger, I feel your pain. I used to come in after running the snowblower, covered with snow... damn swirley wind! :amgry Yes, dressed in layers, even wore ski goggles most of the time. Hot Fingers ski gloves? Hot, my a**. Getting rid of that snowblower was one of my personal triumphs when we moved south.

Maybe you and Janet want to car pool with Joe and Ruth?

Hope Mother Nature cuts you some slack.

Merry Christmas!
Jim & Joan

PS We may have to put something into an abreviations definitions thread to explain "FD"... thanks to Pat, it has become a part of our language here. New folks will need to have this explained. :xlol

Just had to tell you how much I enjoyed your picture of the moon and your decorated boat. Very Neat. Your description of your day cruise warmed a chilly NE damp evening.
Thanks and Merry Christmas

Thanks for the kind words, Pat and Fred. I guess I'm like a kid at show and tell time... I enjoy the discourse this forum provides. Wild Blue and this place has given us the opportunity to have friends all over the country. It's nice to hear that my ramblings are being read by someone besides family.

Merry Christmas,
Jim B.

I don't want to go all mushy or anything, but ain't it the truth! And that is the BEST PART of the C-Dory experience, the extended family and new best friends all over the country!

Jim, Keep up those ramblings, and the warm pix. Right up there with laughter, they are good medicine for the heart.

Roger, we must have had an inversion or something. We watched the Time & Temp sign get down to 12 yesterday during that gorgeous sunrise.

Joe and Ruth, I get four days off, can I go and carry your suitcase?

Look how much fun we are having and it ain't even winter yet. Sure is a great bunch here, and have to give Jim one here, this does beat snow blowing or shoveling. :tux

Merry Christmas,

I must have missed the definition of "FD". What is it?

Well, it's Pat's terminology, but my take on the phrase "frickie-dickie" (used as an adjective to describe a noun, in this particular case it was dolphins)... I believe it was born of frustration and perhaps a bit of cabin fever (think: The Shining). I had posted some images of dolphins frolicking around our boat. Pat then commented on that post by calling them "frickie-dickie dolphins"... seems that Tom may have then referred to yours truly as "the tanned SOB" (I took that as: Sweet Ol' Boy)... and things may have ummm... expanded from there. Distilling this further, when we first met Brent and Dixie, Dixie used the phrase "Oh my hell"... to which I replied, "What was that - Mormon swearing???" I believe "frickie-dickie" may have been some form of swearing. I now take it to mean: "oh, those cool", as in: frickie-dickie dolphins = oh, those cool dolphins.

That's what I'm going with. :wink

Jim,

The term is "oh my heck"

Dixie

My apologies, Dixie, you are so right. That's the way I first heard you say it. It isn't until you get REALLY worked up that it escalates to "oh, my hell".

Lots of discussion about the weather on the forum, while much of the country is in the midst of an arctic blast. I am a weather nerd, but just saw something this morning on weather.com. We all know about their hour-by-hour forecasts... and I have to say, they've been doing a pretty fine job of calling it within 24-36 hours around here lately. But this morning when I clicked on the hour-by-hour local, I saw that they now have detail down to every 15 minutes. "Yeah, right," I thought.

It was beautifully calm this morning when I went out to get the Sunday paper; walking by the canals, the water was like a mirror in the pre-dawn light. I checked the weather when I got back, and it was calling for the anticipated cold front to come in at 10:45. Pretty specific. At 10:30, it was 77º and still calm. At 10:47, the wind picked up and the temp started to drop. Pretty impressive. Our cold front will last a day or so and be just enough to need some long pants for tomorrow.

Saturday, December 20th. Man does not live by boat alone. We've been watching the dredge equipment make it's way into our ship channel. The smaller tugs haul the pipe to the jetties, heavy equipment on land pull the pipes up and drag them onto the beach. We get a front row seat with Wild Blue. We decided to go to the beach on Saturday to watch the land stuff.

BeachE.jpg

When in place, there will be several miles of pipe running along the beach. Spoils dredged from the jetties and ship channel will be pumped onto the beach. Hurricane Dolly did a number on the area, and these spoils will be used to build up more dunes to protect the man-made stuff on the island.

Remember when you were a kid and played with your Tonka trucks in the sandbox? Well, this is certainly the grown-up version...

PipeE.jpg

MovingPipeE.jpg

This guy picks up one end of the pipe with a loop on his bucket and gets his end ready to haul down the beach. A large cat on the other end drags it. They move together at the same speed and push/pull these pipes down the beach to get them ready to hook together. The precision is impressive.

And we weren't the only ones fascinated by it; there was a steady stream of lookers coming by. I'm thinking... that piece of equipment is working in front of the "Beach Rental" stand... I wonder how many of us would pay good money to play in the sand with that thing for an hour or two? :wink

They will be working non-stop (according to the local newspaper) until late February. The last time the ship channel was dredged, there wasn't local coordination to get that sand moved up onto the beach... it just got pumped out into the Gulf. This is better at both ends of the dredge operation.

More of man's designs to try to keep Mother Nature under control. And planned for completion just in time for spring break. 8)

Happy Holidays!

Hello Brat friends,

Dan has been a busy guy... 'tis the season. As his gift to the fans of the Captain Jim comics, here are two holiday strips:

IT'S A GIRL!

We've been looking into bringing a new family member into our lives... today was the day.

NewKittyWUe.jpg

She came with the name Caramel from the Animal Shelter, but we don't feel that suits her (she doesn't know her name). She is kinda caramel colored, perhaps tawny, even (yes, we've considered that as a name, too).

So, until her first vet visit on the 29th, she is Baby Furry Girl Bathurst. No idea how she'll do on the boat, yet, but she was fine with the ride home in the truck. One thing at a time... we think this is the first time she's seen furniture.

We've had a big ol' empty spot in our hearts the last couple months. I guess that means there's room for more love.

Not a Christmas present, but we feel she is a real gift.

Happy Holidays,
JIm & Joan

Jim and Joan, a wonderful kitty! Weve had many, lost most :sad but now have two great ones, Snowball :cat :love and Scooter :cat :love . Hope you and the critters have a great Christmas!

Charlie and Sally

Way to go guys! Congrats on the new addition to the family. She looks darling and we can't wait to see her. Have a Merry Christmas with Steph and Dan and we'll see you soon.

Brent and Dixie

Jim and Joan,

Congratulations on your new pet! Yes, she is now cute and fuzzy, but I am seeing in those dark outlined eyes the spirit of a true Nile Queen!

'Won't be long before she has you two trained properly in the art of belly rubs, etc..

I'm glad you went right on to another cat, esp. from the shelter. They can really help us to see life's true priorities.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all!

John

Just couldn't bear the thought of Wild Blue with no litter box, huh? Seriously, congrats, we all know what a big part of your life Molly was (and will always, immortalized in Dan's drawings).

Congrats on the new additon to the Bathurst family. She is a pretty little furball and I am sure "Lucky" would be willing to show her a good time on your next visit.

My ole pappy was a bird dog trainer and Foxhound judge back in the 30's and he always told me to watch the dog and when the time was right the dog would name himself. So don't get in any hurry to slap a handle on your new kitty. Lets just hope that name doesn't endup "MOB".

Thank you for the kind words, folks (except that comment about "Lucky" from Mike  ). I won't turn this into an ALL CAT ALL THE TIME forum, but...

We have a name AND...
... she went for her first boat ride this afternoon!

We have decided to call her Isabella; chances are she will only be called that when she is in trouble... the rest of the time, she will be Izzy.

Izzy spent her early life in the Animal Shelter in a 3x3 foot cage; she is still in awe of everything in the house. It must seem like DisneyWorld to her. She is full of love, likes to cuddle, and curious about everything... and that is all we were hoping for!

Joan spent the day cooking. When it came time for cleaning, I said, "How 'bout I take Izzy for a boat ride so she doesn't freak out when you run the vacuum cleaner?" I was surprised when Joan said, "Good idea."

I put Izzy in her carrier and took her out to the boat. She watched with interest while I got ready to shove off. I wasn't sure what to expect, but she was a champ. I opened her carrier and put her on the table so she could look out the window... and waited for the crying, frightened looks, and puking. And none of that happened! She seemed to enjoy watching the scenery go by. Yes, really. On the way back home, she took a little nap; then woke up to look out the windows while we came in our canal.

That experience was all I could have asked for... quite the Christmas present. It is probably too early to know for sure, but this little furball has the makings for being a good boatcat. :)

She's coming out of her shyness... we experienced the evening crazies tonight, followed by more snuggling.

There will never be another Molly the cat, but we are ready to make a bunch of new memories with Miss Iz.

Happy Holidays,
Jim B.
