The Cruising Adventures of Wild Blue and crew...

Congrats Jim I too was surprised by the turn out at our light show in Jacksonville. Spectators were rafted up three deep for about a mile along the Saint Johns. Couldn't tell there was a recession by the turn out. One of the neatest little entry's was a 10' John boat amongst all the big boats. I wouldn't even go in the part of the river in day light with a 10' John boat. He had a simple design made to look like and alligator with a long tail trailing behind the boat that the picture doesn't show. It was the last boat and appeared the alligator was chasing the boats.

OK, before Warren asks, here are some of the particulars...

I shot the photos with that little Canon point & shoot, set on "Night Snapshot". Yep, there was some movement, but I doubt I could have gotten anything better with a DSLR on a boat. And no tripod. And when I was done shooting, I could put it in my pocket. And no, Pat, no Photoshop "magic". I did shoot some video clips with it, too... you could hear the music on the big commercial boat behind us. I judged how close he was by how loud the music got!

We covered 18.5 miles, ran the motor just over 5 hours, used 4.4 gallons of gas, ran the generator for closer to 6 hours and used about 1.25 gallons in that. A pretty inexpensive evening's entertainment. :xlol

When we pulled up to the dock and tied off near Louie's (where they held the awards program), tourists came out and took photos of each other in front of our boat. :xlol (We were the first ones to tie off) One gentleman came up to me and asked, "That's a C-Dory, isn't it? Can I ask you a couple questions?"

We spent a few minutes with him, gave him the tour of the boat, and told him about this forum. He wanted to know if a couple could really spend some time cruising on one of these. :xnaughty Yeah, I think so.

Earlier, when we were leaving the judging area, I heard a guy on-shore say, "That's the one! That's a C-Dory! Great boat!" It was dark, so I couldn't see who said it... obviously someone with good taste. 8)

Best wishes,
Jim B.

Today was surprisingly calm after the howling wind of yesterday. We ran out into the Gulf... it went from calm in the Laguna Madre and ship channel to 4-6 foot waves in the Gulf. The waves were widely spaced and the ride was pleasant.

Coming back in, we were listening to music and watching for dolphins. I pulled out my trusty conch shell to call them.

Joan wanted to learn how to get sound out of the shell, so I gave her a quick lesson.

Think it doesn’t work?

We had a lovely afternoon cruising around. Yep, this is why we’re here.

JIm,

That is totally awesome. I've never taken mine out on the water to blow, but when I do it here at home I can usually get some of the neighborhood dogs to howl. Never thought of using the shell on the boat for a Fog horn til just now.

Sure do love your photos. Hope you didn't get to cool down there. heard about snow clear down to New Orleans. Looks like this weekend is going to be the first of real winter in the PNW. Not exactly shorts and T-Shirt weather for a few days.

Hi Harvey,

Sorry to hear that the weather in the PNW may potentially mess with the Lake Union get-together. We had one day of chilly weather, and then a quick rebound. As you could see in the photos, we were in long sleeves, but the windows were open. Any of the "generally warm" places in the continental US (south Florida, south Texas, Yuma, and San Diego) are going to get some occasional chilly stuff. We are another 400 miles further south from Houston and New Orleans, so none of the white stuff for us. We had snow on Christmas Eve in 2004 - just a dusting and it was the first snow here in 109 years. Some people were calling it "A Christmas Miracle"; I told Joan, "We didn't move far enough south." Still, that's not bad odds. :xnaughty

Stay warm up there!

Best wishes,
Jim B.

Jim,

I'm surprised you have not yet had any comments from Pat about his favorite "TF" dolphins and Illuminated alligators etc, etc.
Must be slowing down in his old age...

I dunno, Merv... I'm seeing more comments from Pat about retiring and fewer about how much he loves his job. Oh, and I think those are "FD" dolphins. :xnaughty

Indeed, it is "FD" dolphins - was scratching head over "TF" dolphins. And retiring is more and more on my mind, for sure.

Ok.OK. I stand corrected.

Now you know why I WILL retire next year.

Merv

PS. I like Dolphins. I also like it a lot warmer than it is going to be for the next few days around here.

Just for Pat...

I added the full moon from tonight to a shot of Wild Blue with her Christmas Lights.

BoatLights08AddMoonE.jpg

OK, really, that's the last of the Christmas Lights stuff... bah, humbug! :xnaughty

Best wishes,
Jim

Jim,

Sure hope Pat doesn't mind but I peaked at that Christmas card. Very Nice, You do very nice work. Glad you are missing our weather. Deena and I just got home and it is snowing/raining in the Blue Hole City. We have seen blue sky almost all day, someplace around. Once it got dark, the snow snuck in over the mountains. :tux Merry Christmas. Should be beautiful and white, (and Cold --Oh I know, you didn't even want to know that)--maybe we will get all our winter here in one weekend :xnaughty

Here's a few photos from yesterday, for those who can use some blue skies and warm weather cruising:

Heading out behind the shrimper Miss Joanna...

ShrimperMissJE.jpg

The winds were light; we chugged along at 1800 RPM, making between 5 and 6 knots and burning less than 1 gallon per hour. And, as usual, there were dolphins to watch...

MoreDolphinsE.jpg

Being a weekday and before the holiday, there wasn't a lot of traffic out there today. I took this shot of the boat and the sparkly water... more contrast than the pocket camera could handle. Still, I kinda liked the way it looked...

Days like this, the autopilot gets a workout while we kick back and watch the scenery go by.

Yesterday was one of those just-right days on the water. While perhaps not "grand", it was just a great day. We headed north in the ICW, with a plan to poke around in the Arroyo Colorado... we haven't been through that area since the hurricane.

It was 72º at 8:30 am when we shoved off; a hazy day with low, thin clouds, very little breeze, and the humidity percentage near the temp.... ahhhh, you can breathe in that sea air. We could just barely make out the buildings on South Padre Island, 2 1/2 miles away.

We ran north at about 15 knots. The water was smooth, Wild Blue was like a magic carpet. Yes, there were dolphins, pelicans, ducks, herons. All the senses were getting a workout. There are some fishing cabins along the ICW... some were gone, some seemed to escape undamaged; none were occupied today.

NoPaintE.jpg

GoneE.jpg

Very little traffic until we got to the intersection of the ICW and the Arroyo, where several small boats provided fishing platforms. We ran west in the river, dodged around a dredging operation in the middle of the river, and made our way to the Arroyo City area, where the river is lined with houses and cabins. You could see the effect of the hurricane - new wood where docks had been replaced, some docks that were in need of repair. It looks like most of the homes made it through... most. One two story home was now 1 1/2 stories, and another with a "For Sale" sign that was minus a roof... guess that is advertised as a "fixer-upper"?

PlotterE.jpg

We turned back down-river, putting along at 6 knots. Joan made lunch while we were underway. Ever notice that food tastes better when prepared on the boat? Chugging along back in the ICW, we saw a couple boats about a mile off the waterway, back in the shallows. One was a sailboat, looked to be 25-27'; sitting in a foot of water. The rig looked good from this distance, but I'm not sure how anyone will get that boat out of there.

The white pelicans have migrated south; we saw hundreds of them on the small spoils islands along the way. The white stands out; that and their size - they are much larger than our "sleek" brown pelicans, the locals. The white ones don't dive for their food like the brown pelicans... and we saw lots of diving action today. My favorite thing with the brown pelicans is watching them skim along the water in ground effect... they make it look effortless.

PelicanGrndEffecE.jpg

We knew there was a cold front coming our direction; the sky turned from hazy to gray as we looked over our shoulder to the north. Today is t-shirt and shorts, tomorrow will be long pants.

XmasShirtE.jpg

We spent the afternoon watching the birds, listening to Radio Margaritaville, and feeling the steady pull of the Honda. The ICW here is easy - there's a marker every couple hundred yards. You have to follow the markers, though; even though it's water as far as you can see, there are short legged birds standing in the water just outside the marked channel.

Our timing was just right for the 3:00 opening of the swingbridge... another indicator of a just-right day. A dramatic sky to end the day...

Jim B.

Here's a couple "almost sunset" photos for those of you needing to see some warmth. We were in the ship channel, anticipating the sunset, when one cloud moved in and settled right at the horizon. Still, not a bad way to end the day.

Thanks Jim,

Seven PM and it just dropped to 15 degrees! But is was Sunny in Sunny Sequim today. Fortunately it was a balmy 21 while I was using the snowblower. I did have some FD Deer watching as I worked.

Just had to tell you how much I enjoyed your picture of the moon and your decorated boat. Very Neat. Your description of your day cruise warmed a chilly NE damp evening.
Thanks and Merry Christmas
