I found this on Wander the West. Looks like a good way to Clean The Glass on the boat or any vehicle. Maybe even keep some of the Lake Powell water spots at bay...
Thanks Wandering Sagebrush
The "proper" application of RainX is good information. Even w/out using wipers RainX is a great help with salt water spray. I'm concerned about using steel wool around my boat--I can just see little rust streaks (from little pieces of steel)all over!!! Wonder if Scotch Brite pads would work as well for cleaning/polishing the glass. Polishing with the steel wool would certainly get the windshield clean though.
I once drilled out a steel rivet over the windshield then swept up the filings - or so it thought. After the next rain there was a zillion tiny rust spots in my non-skip. Good times cleaning that up
Btw, baking soda and water makes a great mild abrasive.
Separate from the windshield cleaning specifically, there is bronze wool to use on boats (instead of steel wool). It comes in various grades of fine/coarseness, just as steel wool does.
I would never use steel wool on the boat. There is bronze wool if you need to use something like that. Bounce pads work well for most cars and RV, follow with Rainex cleaner and Rainx. For the boat, and really deep cleaning of windshields, or any glass there is a product called:
Amaz, Clean and Green Water stain remover. It is used for car detailing, and our class company suggested it for bad water stains on the shower. It is available at ACE hardware or home depot. The white nylon pads are far friendlier to your boat (and glass) than the steel wool.
On a related note, I had really good luck with Flitz for cleaning the tough water spots off the berth hatch tinted window. Glass cleaner wasn't touching it.
I believe that the berth hatch is an acrylic or lexan (not positive which), and as such probably best cleaned with something likePlexus or Novus, which are specific cleaners for clear plastic.
Flitz makes a number of different products, some are good for plastic polishing, and others might be too abrasive. So check to be sure.
