Purpleheart has a creamy white/gray sapwood but like its name suggests, the heartwood is a bright, striking purple when freshly cut, darkening into a deeper purple with age. It has a medium to fine texture with a luster that ranges from medium to high; its grain is usually straight but can be wavy or irregular. Purpleheart has high bending and crushing strength and stiffness with medium resistance to shock loads. Density is 50 to 75 lbs per cubic foot. Relitatively hard wood and can be hard on tools.
It is a beautiful wood. Spar Lumber in Long Beach used to have a fairly good supply. (but they are out of business).
My favorite is Tulipwood, followed closely be Cocobolo. With Tulipwood, Dave could be careless and the blood streaks would only add to the patina. The only problem is that Tulipwood is pretty expensive and nice pieces are much harder to find than Cocobolo. We have two exotic wood suppliers nearby but neither are willing to "snip off short pieces...."
Put our name on one. We'll get it from you at the boat show, if that's all right. I know Don mentioned it in another thread, but this is the first time I've read this one. We also have one of your "fish knockers".
Dee, I have you and Don covered. You can choose from Cherry, Rhododendron, Teak, Madrone, Redwood Burl, Myrtlewood, or Mahogany. I think I have about 30 available and 10 more that are spoken for.
Hello David,
How about some black walnut I have a bunch of peices about three to four inches wide and a foot long and three quarters thick if you want some let me know and I can bring it to the boat show for you.
Richard
I had the opportunity yesterday to meet David (he lives on an island close to Anacortes) and see the Anna Leigh in person and examine his assortment of hub caps. He does beautiful work. I paid extra and got a drop-dead gorgeous rosewood hub.
Some are there today, Thurs. Some Friday, but I think the majority are going on Sat. I am aiming at being there when it opens and then want to take the shuttle to the Boats Afloat Show also, then Sat evening of course will be the party at the factory.
I got mine today; in Madrone--truely a work of art. It will remind us of the great times we had boating in the PNW--and my mother who loved the Madrone trees (she was an artist, painted several scenes with Madrone trees--and boated to Alaska with us until she was in her early 90's.
Received the hubs today, David. Awesome is an understatement. I can't wait to get down to the boat and fit them on and I'll try to take some pix, since my wheel isn't the standard Teleflex version. I'm grateful that you took the extra time/effort to "customise" them in a smaller version
What's the saying...better late than never to get something done, rec'd my "Cocobolo" center cap a month or so ago, a perfecto fit! Thanks so much for your fine work David, it's gorgeous (IMHO).
PS: This cocobolo IS heavy wood as Don (Sneaks) pointed out, but hey, I've got a 25 -- I think it can handle it!
I am looking to upgrade my current steering wheel. I received a center from David (big thanks!) and really like the look of Steve's wheel in the previous post. I have a 1989 22' cruiser.
Is this wheel the one on the new boats? Based on a quick search, it looks like the Teleflex Morse Talon wheel with 14 inch diameter. I'd appreciate the make and model (and if anyone has suggestions on the best place to buy one).
