Steering wheel 22' Crusier

Has anyone taken the rubber padding off a 2001 or later 22' Cruiser and exposed the stainless wheel? I like the looks of the wheel without the rubber grip material. Also it would make it much easier to install a knob.

Not quite what you are asking, but just some info in case you are interested in a new wheel. I know I held off for awhile just because I wasn't sure what to get.

My 2002 came stock with a stainless wheel and wooden hub. Nice looking (just stainless, no rubber padding) but HUGE diameter (15" IIRC). I had been wanting a smaller wheel with a knob, but was putting it off.... then I put in a different seat and thus really needed a smaller diameter wheel so I could fit between the seat and the wheel. I bought a 13" wheel with knob straight from GEM (great customer service on the phone, btw). Here is the info from my receipt:

Wheel: Item 152107, 13" 3-spoke wheel with deluxe knob. $109.83 (last spring).

I got two nuts, one for now to fit the Teleflex cable helm; and one for future hydraulic steering.

Nut: Item 1502, 1/2"-20 (This is the one for the Teleflex NFB cable steering.) Free (one nut comes with wheel, your choice of size).

Nut: Item 1501, 5/8"-18 (Fits Teleflex hydraulic helm). $12.49

Shipping was a little under $20, UPS Ground. It did have to go cross country to get to me as they are in Florida. Here is a not-very-good-but-boat-is-in-storage photo. BTW, I think they also make a 5-spoke more like our originals. I just thought I'd try something different.

Big Mac-

I'm guessing that the rubber padding you have on your wheel is an addition by a previous owner, probably bought at an auto parts store, sitting right there on the shelf with the knobs and other "custom" accessories.

I've never seen one on a factory equipped boat at a boat show or dealer.

Either way, it should come off and be just fine. You'll probably have to clean and polish the stainless a bit, however.

I noticed quite a few of the "rubber coated" wheels when I was C-Dory shopping. It seemed like they used them mostly in the mid-*2000's. Here is one example, on a 2005 C-dory. I presume this is what Big Mac is considering removing:

*Although it looks like Big Mac's boat is a 2001. OTOH mine is a 2002 and had the all-stainless wheel with a wooden center cover.

Yes, you're probably right if Big Mac has the "dipped in rubber" (Plastisol?) type wheel. Much harder to remove (!)

this is enlightening, I am trying to think of a C-Dory I have seen that did not have the "standard" 6 spoke black rubberized wheel. They didn't come stock with a wooden hub, but there were a couple of CBRATS who made the wooden hubs and there were quit a few produced, some custom in one way or another, and some custom woods.

Here's a pix of mine with the "original" black plastic hub. This was taken shortly after I got the boat.

It has since been changed to a new custom hub. Easy to do once you have the hub.

Mine did come stock with plain (non-rubberized) stainless and a wooden hub. I think there were a number of variations over the years, from the "car style" wheels of the 80's/90's, to the plain stainless spokes, the rubber spokes, the black plastic (looking, anyway) hub, and the wooden hub. Here is a photo of my stock wheel (before I changed it). Pardon the lack of framing; I was actually taking a photo of the Sportpilot. While the center hub was wood, it wasn't anything super "special" like the custom made ones by a C-Brat.

I like the stainless wheel, but think it would be slick and cold, especially if your hands were wet. Nice looking hub, and really surprising it would come from the factory that way... They weren't much into frills. Does it attach with a single set screw? I like that the wooden hub feels warm.

Yes, you can just see the set screw opening at about the "7 p.m." position in the photo.

Here is a photo of C-Swell, which is a 2003. Looks like the same wheel. I suppose it's possible it was a dealer mod (C-Swell looks like it was sold by the same dealer as my boat - I see many of the same dealer-added upgrades as on mine). I guess I'd have to look at some others from the same era that were sold in different parts of the country. Anyway, C-Swell's wheel matches the one that came in my boat.

Well then it's possible the wooden hub was added by Three Rivers Marine in Crystal River to the stock wheel. All three of our boats were sold there. They seemed to add a "package" of upgrades common to most (all?) of their boats, much of which was made by JP Canvas.

(Fitted sole carpets, Sunbrella edge-bound sailcloth window coverings, custom zippered Sunbrella/screen door, screens for forward hatch and forward opening window, bag for screens/curtains, and a bimini with cover and or without side curtains. And maybe wooden wheel hub?).

At any rate, I think it's safe to say that there was a variety of wheels put on the 22 Cruisers, ranging from the "car style" wheels of the earlier boats, to the spoked stainless wheel, to the spoked and rubber-dipped stainless wheel. I've seen both wooden hubs and black (plastic?) hubs in the stainless wheels as sold new.

Sunbeam, You are right here:

I wonder if the whole steering package, wheel, cable of hydraulic, was all dependent on the selling dealer? And maybe the boat left the factory without any of that.... seems like that could be a good possibility, and during much of that time boats were being built on order so they left t\he factory direct to the owner, and speced to that owners request, maybe based on suggestion from either the sales person at C-Dory or on recommendations from friends or this site. There are several owners here who purchased and took delivery of their C-Dory direct from the factory.

My 2006 has the "factory" rubberized coating wheel. I have no idea what the fit and finish of the SS is underneath. Those wheels which are sold as "destroyer" SS Rimmed wheels, are nicely finished at the welds. I have also put the "Brody" or "suicide" knob on the rubber wheels, and they do work OK, but getting the right amount of tightening can be a bit tricky.

If you want SS, then I would buy the wheel you want. Many Edison come with the knob, then there is no hose clamp type of fastener on the wheel.
