Spare Cabin Keys

When I purchased my 22 Cruiser about a month and a half ago, I only received one cabin key. I know I'm going to lose it sometime, and I have to have some spares. Does anyone know where to get one? The key shops locally don't seem to have the blanks to copy or know where to get them. Maybe C Dory?

Thank you.

If you purchased new, it should have come with two keys. Nevertheless, blanks are not readily available and if memory serves me, replacement keys must be purchased from the lock manufacturer and they are spendy!! :amgry

I had serious locking problems with mine and eventually replaced it with a new lock. Others have simply given up and installed a hasp and lock.

You can get them from Diamond SeaGlaze using the number on the key you have. $17 each from the dealer. But I found a lock shop that has the blanks. Maybe you can also.

I too have found a lock shop that handles the blanks. You can't get them at a hardware store. Call a locksmith they should be able to help. My spare key was $ 7.00.

Hi Folks,

I replaced the cabin door lock and picked up new keys at a locksmith. I put together two sets of keys on floating key holders. The cabin door key, the engine key, dingy lock key, the trailer hitch lock key, and the trailer lock key. I also have the last two with the car keys.

I keep one set ashore and take it with me when I go boating. The other set is hidden on the boat so I can get access at the last minute with out going home to get the key, like when I was on a USCGAux Patrol and needed something from my boat.

Works well for me.

The key appears to be from www.mobella.com
( http://www.southco.com/landingpages/mobella/ )

I checked the website but didn't see any information specifically relating to obtaining replacement keys, so sent them an email asking about getting replacements. Stay tuned.

For those who have found replacements - are the key blanks from Mobella or another manufacturer? If you would check your (replacement) key, it may show a manufacturer and/or key code which would be helpful.

Thanks.

Good going Casey! I have a locksmith friend who can make any key (he is also a gunsmith who makes guns from scratch)--but I know that when he makes a custom key for me, it is a loss financially for him, due to the time to machine the blank if he has to. (By machining the blank, he would take a piece of brass stock and make an exact copy of my key with a milling machinge--not just a key cutter). I'll have to order several extra keys for each of the boats...

Thanks to all who replied, especially Casey. I ordered two keys this afternoon and they were shipped today. I sure do like this website, and I sure love my Petit Bateau.

Thanks all,

Gandhi

Realize this is an old thread but some folks might be needing one. I called the phone numbers listed in the thread and found my key # to be on backorder. They could sell me a blank but I would need it to be cut at a local locksmith.

I figured I would call around local (Puget Sound - Seattle) lock smiths and found a shop called Bulger Safe and Lock in North Seattle. They were able to cut me a spare key for my Yamaha Engines and also cut duplicate key for my cabin door. The cost per key was $12.50 Door and $8.50 Engines. A little steeper than the prices mentioned elsewhere, but at least I got them while I waited.

Perhaps this will help others who might need a spare key cut and want to get it locally.

Our 2006 has the glass door, and the original key/lock is from Trioving Norway. The direct replacement was the Ilco T06, which wasn't available from small hardware stores, but was in stock at the first local locksmith we went to. But it sounds like the 2002 had a different lock mfg.

The blanks for TO6 keys are not readily available in the states. All the locksmiths in my town did not have them in stock. One place said they could order them, but the blanks were more than $10 ea and I had to order a box of ten. Then I'd have to pay about $5 ea to get them cut.

I did find Ernul's in New Bern, NC. They have (had) the blanks in stock for $5 ea. plus shipping. I ordered a couple and had a different locksmith (not the one mentioned above) cut them for about $3 ea.

Casey, good work on the southco info.
Only thing I would add after calling them for my key was where you're part number had 911 in it,that actually should be xxx ,or the 3 digit number on the key itself.they referred me to a local distributor in Raleigh nc ,and got it there .timely post since I was trying to find one yesterday. mine came from DB Roberts 800 717 4377

I lost my Suzuki boat key and cabin key while transitioning from my old truck to my new (to me) truck last month. After researching this site, I came to this thread looking for a Mobella spare key for the cabin door. I called Southco based on the information above.

However, that info is 9 years old and I was told that they now refer you to authorized dealers. I was given the name of the authorized dealer in Seattle, All-West Components and Fasteners. I was told they can sell me a key but they are wholesalers and minimum order was 3 @ $10 each. So if I wanted to pick it up local, it would be $32.88 incl tax. However, he provided me with the full part number for my key and gave me a retail website where I could order only 1. The name of the website is:

Ugly Fish Inc. uglyfishinc.com

Apparently they don't do any ordering by phone but it was very easy for me to order online directly as long as I had the full part # and the part # imbedded on the key. $10 + shipping = $15.70 EZ BREEZY!!

It also looks like the website has Mobella locks to sell in case you want to replace yours. Thus, a very good find! Make this the go-to site for those of you who own Mobella cabin locks.

**on edit**
I was able to easily order a spare Suzuki key through Browns Point Marine Service. Again, I had the part number stamped on the key so it was very easy and fairly inexpensive at $12.42 + $4.91 for the rubber key cap. All in all, the start of my day has been very productive!

When I bought my boat, the PO had lost the key that locked the Perko battery switch. I called Perko and they had me send them the key number (on the lock) and a copy of my registration. I got two keys in the mail a few days later.

One other source for blanks. Silca ESL # MBL 1

I brought my original southco blank to a locksmith in Everett and they had a number of these blanks I was able to get as spares.

Keys for more than $3 seems like a rip off. We're just talking about the cabin door key, right? I mean, it's not like a "smart" key...

I have found keys with similar blank patterns, but usually have MORE to them than the required blank and used a 3" grinder to liberate the useful part from the chaffe. I generally buy three copies for every key I need because I tend to destroy them. I think it would go better with a dremel, but I don't have one.

This can work, and it can fail. Depends on how good you are with a grinder.
