Did contact owner and got the following answer back, like I said, something does not smell right, do you agree?.


The boat is not sold yet . It is in outstanding condition . There are no structural or electrical problems with this boat. Both hull and interior in nice condition .No mechanical issues with this engine at all. It starts easily and restart easily all day. It has ALWAYS been properly maintained and never run hard or abused.There aren’t any service indicators or warning lights on. For the winter, the boat always gets acid washed on the bottom to remove any algee .Also it has been winterized each year .Trailer is in very nice condition and the tires are almost new with plenty of tread left.  The interior is in good condition. It has a clear and clean title, free of all liens and encumberances.   
I have to let you know that i left town a few days ago because i have to help my daughter organize her wedding, and i may stay here a while, but this is no problem because i`ll sell it through A4U services. I guess you used A4U before, if you didn`t let me know because i met people that never used it and i will explain how it works in detail. I want to sell it now because i need the money for my daughters wedding so if you are interested in buying it let me know.Also if you need more info or photos please don't hesitate to ask.

Let me know what everyone thinks or knows about this ad before I go further.

This scam is really prevalent among the Toyota motorhome crowd...

The grammar and spelling should also be a clue.

A low price. Low hours. Too good to be true and the owner is out of town. When he meets you at the boat, with registration in hand, that is when I would start negotiating.
 
I had a buy in So Cal use pics of my restored VW saying it was "for sale"... for only $5K mind you. I played a little with him via text. He had the mental capacity of a pebble. BUT, he was probably conning a few people. He went on to do it NUMEROUS times, w/ various other restored VWs and other cars. Eventually, the LA Sheriff's Office pursued charges. Don't know the outcome though.

Buyer beware. If it looks/sounds too good to be true....
 
Note no CF numbers (blanked out probably). The boat could be a 1989--with the teak hand rails. The fake teak Decaguard on the galley counter and table are consistent with this age of boat. I agree most likely a scam.
 
I’m always looking for another CD restoration/renovation project, the first CD that I/we purchased was a 1983 Classic in Spring, Texas for $7800.00.

On that boat nothing much worked, engine did not run, trailer was lousy, etc. etc.

However, If we would have actually known the condition of that boat and what we were getting into, before we said “yes”, the story may have been different.

In fact, Tex Allen told me at our first gathering, that he had looked at that boat and it was too rough for him (Tex is a very talented craftsmen).

In my enthusiasm, I had mistakenly sent a sizable deposit to hold the boat and was committed, at the end of the project, everything did turn out well, but it was a real education about what can and does go wrong on long distance deals.

In reverse however, the last two CD’s we have purchased (one in Idaho and the other in South West Arizona), were exactly as described by the sellers and priced to sell/buy.

All went well with these two deals, because of the communication and reputation/s of the people involved.

The 19’ we just purchased was a cash “at time of pick up deal”, which was the sellers requirement.

Other that carrying that much cash, I believe that was probably the best way to conduct a buy/sell transaction, pull out the cash when everything is as understood.

Ron, I googled A4U and found a lot of locksmiths, plus a couple of organizations that didn't seem like they had anything to do with financial transactions. I think your sniff test gave you the right answer.

They are a chain of ebay drop off stores and they offer their services for craigslist users too. They picked up the boat from my home within a few days I left the town and intended to sell it when i got back (if you ask why i'm selling it now when i'm not around), but the wedding costs too much and i need to sell it now to help my daughter get married. They will take care of shipping, payment and title transfer(it is already signed by me and notarized so they are empowered to do this ). So if you want to purchase the boat, all you have to do is to register on their website. After you are registered with them an invoice will be sent to you. There you will find out more details about this sale like how to complete the payment, shipping process, insurance, etc. Afterward you have to complete the payment. They receive the payment and start the shipping process. You receive the boat and you have 10 days to inspect it and see if it's exactly as described. If you decide to keep it, you let them know and they will transfer the payment to me, if you decide to return it, they will give you a full refund back and return the item on my cost. So you can be sure the boat is exactly as described because i wouldn't sell something that i know it will be returned and loose extra money. Be careful Ron. I think you are dealing with the real deal criminals. They could be very dangerous. They may be very dangerous. I recommend a call to the FBI. I would not want them to have my address.

I saw this ad a few days ago and sent it to my husband asking if it could be "for real". LA would certainly be do-able for us to at least check it out. It certainly looks to be in nice shape, but would probably need a new motor and electronics.

I wouldn't buy a boat from just pictures but I'm sure someone might. I saw one a while back on Ebay and was going to first go check it out before I bid... but if this guy isn't even allowing you to see the boat, that's just strange.

We are finding it really frustrating to find the right C-Dory (I want RED with a face forward port seat) in the right regional area. Even if we do have to ship, we still feel we have to go there and check it out. This is a project for retirement when we can drive all over the country to find it... sigh...
 
Don't give up, your patience will eventually pay off. There are a lot of folks here who can confirm that.

And don't be afraid to do the conversion of the port-side seat to face forward (a barber chair conversion), it's pretty easy.

Also, you might want to consider buying a new C-Dory or Marinaut and getting exactly what you want.

Counter scam em. Tell them you have a money order to mail directly to them for the 9,000, but that was your entire life savings and that you need 32.50 for the Fed-Ex fees to get the money to them. As soon as you can get the 32.50 for Fed-Ex the 9,000 will be on the way. If you ever get the 32.50 tell them that you decided to not send the 9,000 until you can see a copy of the registration and a valid title and full maintenance records including receipts for all of the oil changes on the engine and wheel bearings, and a copy of the lubrication intervals on the trailer hitch.

maryvmcclain, it is often safe to buy a boat from well known C Brats from photos--but you still want to see the boat and sea trial it, unless you know a lot about boats.

As for the red--I have only had one of the C Dories in the color I prefer--they all run the same! So go for what you can find.

Have you ridden in a C Dory--many of the navigators prefer to sit in the aft dinette seat. Although there are a few advantages to the "Barber chair conversion, foreword facing seat--there are some disadvantages. You do give up some storage space. The ride is better in the aft dinette seat, and back there you can put a book on the table in front of you for reading etc.
