Although it rained steadily this morning during the annual Memorial Day obserance activities in Arlington, Wa., I found it to be as well attended (or perhaps even better attended) than previous years. The observance is strictly a small town somber observance with the parade down main street consisting of the American Legion, VFW, Boy and Cub Scouts, the High School Jr. ROTC, the Arlington High School Band, an antique flatbed truck with several of our local WWII survivors, a couple of restored military vehicles and a few vets on Harleys. Following a brief raising of the flag and positioning of the flag at half staff at the memorial park on the main street, the community dispersed and recongregated at the local cemetary.
At the local cemetary, the raising of the colors, the Arlington High School Band playing the "National Anthem", "God Bless America" and "Eternal Father Strong To Save", several remembrance speeches including a couple of young men that served in the initial entry to Baghdad, and culminating in a three man rifle salute and "Taps".
Upon my return home at noon, I returned the colors posted on our flag staff on our home's front lawn from 1/2 staff to full staff.
My Memorial Day is now in keeping with our family's tradition!.
In Remembrance of Those Who Served and Paid the Ultimate Sacrifice.... :rose
