SO WHAT DID YOU DO WITH OR ON YOUR C-DORY TODAY??

I've often wondered whether a SS prop might be desirable at its much higher cost if you boat in an area that has lots of kelp tubular stems floating around. Lord knows I fairly often slice right thru some of those.

That is a good question-and I don't have the answer, but I have had as much problem with water flow with heavy grass or kelp, as getting thru it. I have had a fin keel sail boat stopped dead in their tracks at night when running into a floating bed of kelp in the Catalina Channel.

I have hit some fairly good size branches with the SS props and no damage. No rocks yet...But in dinghy's I have hit rocks with aluminum props, which caused significant damage--one episode destroyed the gear case. (12 1/2' RIB in AK, free standing rock, just under the surface...hit at planing speed.). (I had a kicker on the RIB because we traveled significant distances from the larger boat.).

Merry and I took our cameras under our boat in the slip. Visibility was really bad, about two feet with a lot of silt stirred up. Why would we even try to photograph in those conditions? My favorite nudibranch, Antiopella barbarensis made a rare appearance. I found five of them in the salty fog. Getting really close with a 105mm lens allowed me to get some decent shots without getting dirty water in the frame. Well, that and Photoshop.

Finally got my steering working. Ended up replacing both the cabin and cockpit helms, however it was the cockpit helm that was bad. Also, finally got my new bimini top! Was made by a local guy that does great work at a fair price.

Phil,
Every time you post the photos, I am astounded by not only the quality of the photograph, the use of light and the artistry of your photography! It also verifies that the diving in Southern California, is excellent, and many people miss the wonders which lie just below the surface in the California near shore and offshore waters.

Thank you taking the time to share your talents!

Thank you Bob. Most people wouldn't even get in the water in King Harbor, especially when it's as dark and green as it has been lately. I work hard to get those images, but couldn't do it without patience, good equipment, and Photoshop.

I made another dock dive yesterday. Visibility was between one and two feet, not exactly conducive to underwater photography. I looked at the bottom right in front of my face and was excited to find a bolt I dropped last week. A foot away were two Aeolidia loui, Shag Rug nudibranchs. I've never seen one south of Morro Bay, so it turned out to be a productive dive after all.

Here you go John. Nice. Thanks for flying the Stars and Stripes.

The issue could be with your browser version, or operating system, certainly not the operator.

Ash from the west coast fires blanketed the area a couple of weeks ago, including the ocean. I don't know if it fed the latest plankton bloom but we had less than five feet of visibility around Palos Verdes this week. I managed to get a few decent shots from inches away.

Due to Chinese virus restrictions on Canadian travel, we spent a lot of time
at Stuart Island, back and forth between Reid and Prevost in pursuit of crab.

Other than a couple of trips over to Roche Harbor, we spent more time towing
The Pocket Yacht than we did running her. :sad

Right now, she needs a good cleaning to remove all of the harbor grunge then, it's back on the trailer for the winter.
:sad :cry

Today I made a transducer spray shield out of an old license plate.

If you have one of these newer Garmin transducers you may have noticed they kick up quite a bit of spray. It's mostly coming up thru the gap between the front of the transducer/bracket and the transom.

On my Powell trip back in May I REALLY noticed it. Any time I was in the cockpit while my buddy was driving I'd get pretty wet from the spray being sucked back into the cockpit.

Anyhow, Garmin makes a spray shield for these transducers now and they're about $20. I figure, what fun is it to fork out $20 bucks for a finely crafted piece of flat stainless when you can waste an hour making one out of crappy aluminum.

Airmar (which makes a lot of the transducers on the market) makes a piece the snaps into the bracket that blocks the gap between the transducer and the mount. Have it on my boat.

Not sure how long a piece of license plate will last. I have a hard enough time keeping them intact on my trailer and that's not going through the water at 20-30 MPH. Lost one already and caught the current plate just before it came completely off.

Phil, your underwater photography never ceases to amaze me. Thank you for showing us that which is lying just under the surface. :)

Amen!!

Curious how close you are to the octopus? And how big is it?
