SO WHAT DID YOU DO WITH OR ON YOUR C-DORY TODAY??

The ramp you were thinking of on the oregon side is the gleason street ramp, where the river patrol has their office. That is where the officers told me it wasn't safe to leave your vehicle over night. Overnight parking is what I was looking for. At this point Kalama and Cathlamette seem to be the only relatively safe places to leave your vehicle overnight. Haven't been to Chinook Landing to park yet but would consider it. I will be up there today and will look it over. Thanks for the info.
 
Stopped at Chinook Landing for a look. It has a gate that is supposed to be closed every night. Looks reasonably secure. I talked to some people at the ramp and they thought it would be okay for overnight parking. Think I will talk to the city and see what they say about reports of theft or vandalism. The folks at the ramp did recommend camas as a good ramp however. Very secure and watched. Another possibility.
 
Great day on the Columbia for crabbing. Three pots, 2 hours, 20 keepers. Friend's boat got about a dozen keepers. They are considerably fuller and heavier than last time.
 
Phil, the video is great. I love when they come to the boat. It looks like one youngster in the group. Any idea what group it is or any of the members? Here in the sound we have all the orcas named but I don't know about other pods around the pacific.

As for your underwater work. That was not all from one dive was it? incredible. I wish just one of my 1500 photos from hawaii looked that good. Thank you for sharing.
 
All of the underwater shots were from the first dive that morning. We had twenty-five feet visibility, the best I've seen at Marineland in a long time. It makes photography much easier.
Alisa Shulman-Janiger, author of Killer Whales of California and Western Mexico is the one taking photos from the bow of her boat in one of my shots. She identified all twelve as being members of three transient family groups that frequently meet up. There were four mothers in the group, including CA49. I'll know the others when Alisa sends me her pics. Part of the group usually stay around Monterey, while some are from Vancouver.

I made a quick trip to Camano Island from our Sacramento house, ran the boat up to Triton for a re-wire of the trailer lights. They had just rolled a new 23 Venture out. Very nice looking. I brought the boat back to Sacramento to prepare for numerous winter projects. Windlass, camper back etc.

That must have been you that we saw last week. We were on the west side of I-5 and were approaching the Triton plant. You must have taken the on-ramp north of Triton to get onto I-5 as you were headed south. Everything happened so fast that we weren't sure if it was Pat & Patty's DAYDREAM as it was being towed by a Nissan pickup. Thought it looked more like a 22CD than a 25' so NOW we know.
 
That was me, I looked over and missed the ramp I wanted so just took the next ramp. I had only a couple hours sleep from the 14 hour drive up, then hooked up the boat, all the cover straps were frozen so it was a challenge just to get the boat hooked up. Greg re-did the wiring which was hot and replaced it with tinned 12ga wire and new LED tail lights.
 
Nice photos. Up here in the San Juan's that would be a hefty fine for being that close to the whales. We are required to stay at least 100 yards from any whale. In year's past we would sail out and have the whales swim around us (we never sailed into them) and that too has been declared illegal. The other thing to remember is to turn off all depth sounders.
Our photos have gotten much harder to get, however our pods have been so consistent that we can almost set our clock by them. Every afternoon off the west side of the island at least one of the three pods makes a show.
A couple of years ago while kayaking I was actually nudged by one of the females. Didn't knock me over, but did put a few gallons of water in the kayak. That was a little too close :smileo
 
Great video and photos. "3 transient family groups that frequently meet up" wonder if they are the 3 pods from up here, San Juan area. I would think that in California they would be transient since they are considered home when here in the PNW. Also wonder if the CA49 is a unique individual, or if it could have a PNW identity too?

Annual cleaning and maintainance this weekend and next. This weekend I replaced the carpeting on the trailer side boards, washed the boat and made up new lines for the fenders and spring lines. Next weekend will be waxing the boat.
 
I Pulled her out of the Boat Barn, and started loading up for Fl. Checked the air in the tires and Noticed the Air Valves were air cracked bad. So I Pulled the tires off and put new Valves Stems in the tires. Got her loaded and read to head South Friday. Jim
 
Cleaned out the cabin prepping for sale. There was a lot of stuff in those cabinets and we pulled about 400 lbs of goods out today. More tomorrow and hopefully done.

Spent as good share of last night on the boat. Reading, listening to good music, remembering and planning. Doing some log book catchup. Worst part about the whole adventure, :twisted: :cry :lol: the boat was in the barn :oops: :oops: :oops:

I got a Bose noise Canceling headset last summer as I use hearing aids now and don't want any further loss if possible. I found them awesome cutting the engine noise to a very quiet hum. I had to have the VHF on very loud however to hear transmissions. I got the idea that maybe I could hook my headset to the external speaker lead on the Icom 304 VHF. I wired a female mini jack to the external output leads and plugged in the headset. Hey it works fine. Now this season I will be cruising in company a lot I can have the benefit of noise canceling and when a call comes thru not have to pull the headset off or fool with slowing down. I find at speeds around 8 knots I don't use the headset, but for skimming speeds I like it. Now I will need to get Carolyn some headphones and a double jack into the radio. At least until I set up the copilots seat with a VHF and plotter/radar, and put her to work. Bring out more money. George :smiled
 
Nice job George. Maybe a VOX intercom like on the airplane?

I just got my C-Dory Calendar finished and back from the printer. Too late for Christmas, but good for the new year they are out in the mail to family.
