SO WHAT DID YOU DO WITH OR ON YOUR C-DORY TODAY??

Had a great day at Blake island today. Dropped the Portland Pudgy down and took the girls for a ride around the island. Took a little hike and then had some good dinner. Got to see the moon come up over Seattle. What a great way to spend a weekend.

Winterizing the fresh water system, defrosting the refrigerator, and getting the boat ready to be put up for the winter. A sad time indeed. The AirHead toilet is simple to deal with. Empty the liquids tank in the toilet in the house, empty the solids tank in a trash bag, spray both tanks out with a hose and let dry before re installing in the boat.

I'll take a few more runs on the lake over the next few days, then remove my electronics displays, turn off the XM subscriptions, and run the boat over to Bayview marina where they'll put her on the trailer, service the Honda's, clean the hull, etc. and store her for the winter.

The only bad thing about winter in the Midwest...

Put 'er on the trailer yesterday and pressure washed the bottom. Now waiting for the next decent day to run the engines out in a barrel.

Summer is officially over. :sad

Picked up my boat from EQ today where it's been for the past few weeks for the annual maintenance and a few modifications to the fuel system. In tuning up the engines, Carl discovered that the throttle cables were set up in such a way that neither engine could reach full throttle. He fixed that.

When I got the boat, it was set up the "standard way" in which each engine drew off of it's own separate fuel tank. Well, when I was about 60 miles offshore this summer, I realized that this could be a problem. E.g. if I planned my fuel usage for 1/3 going out, 1/3 coming back and 1/3 in reserve BUT one engine failed, then the 1/3 I had in reserve turned into 1/6th since half of it wasn't available to me. Also, if I had to come back on one engine, I wouldn't be on plane so I could either wallow almost on plane and get terrible fuel mileage OR slow down to 6kts and have a 10 hour return trip. Wallowing might not be an option since the available fuel to return was calculated assuming the mileage on plane so basically a planned 2-3 return hour trip would become a 10 hour trip instead of something closer to 4-5 hours on one engine.

So (short story long), I had EQ rig the boat with a cross over system that allows either engine to run off of either or both tanks. I also had them replace the fuel filter/water separators with ones that had clear bowls as the ones that came with the boat were solid metal and you couldn't see if there was water in there. I also had them give the full boat a good look over to check out everything else and make any additional recommendations as needed. Fortunately everything else was OK (except for a non functioning horn which I'll fix myself this winter).

As always, the charge was not only fair but lower that what I expected. More importantly (much more importantly in fact), I know everything was done right - that's priceless in my book especially when I'm 60 miles offshore in pretty cold water.

Excellent point Roger. I hadn't thought about running on separate tanks like that. It makes sense now that you mention it. I suppose I will have to think about having a system set up to be able to switch tanks between the engines. Thanks for the report!

Roger, I agree and need to do that on Thataway and Captain's Cat. How about a diagram or some pictures or both?

Charlie

Charlie,

Below is a a picture of how it's done - Basically, it consists of a crossover valve + a valve for each tank. If the crossover valve is closed, each engine draws off of it's own tank. If the crossover valve is open, and the valves to both tanks are open, both engines draw from both tanks. If the crossover valve is open and the valve to either tank is closed, both engines will draw from the tank that has the open valve. It's a pretty simple arrangement and it solves the problem.

Roger-

Nice diagram and explanation!

It might be nice for anyone using the system to copy the diagram and explanation, and add it to their owner's manuals collection for a subsequent owner.

The valves could be numbered on the diagram and tagged in place for an extra clear presentation to the mechanically disinclined.

This would be especially useful on a rental/charter boat.

Thanks Roger. I got that part. Was particularly interested on where in the system the primer bulbs went, the filters also. And, if you have fuel flow sensors inserted in the fuel lines, where they ended up? Would think those would have to be closest to each individual engine, right? Do you know what kind of valves/fittings that Les used (maybe he'll chime in and respond).

Just sent you a PM with trailer measurements you asked about.

Charlie

Charlie,

When I get a chance, I'll take some photos. I think the paperwork from EQ has the part numbers for the valves. I don't have fuel flow sensors and I don't have primer bulbs. I'll make a more complete diagram with the locations of the filters etc once I get a nice weekend day to spend an hour or two on the boat to trace things out.

When Penny and I returned from the San Juan's this afternoon we found the dock occupied by the CBP. Well they were very interested in our tomcat. We gave them a tour and it impressed them. C-dorys rule!

Spent the weekend in Portland (Oregon) and 2 days on the Columbia River. Launched at Chinook Landing and went up river to Multnomah Falls, and then Down river to the I-5 bridge. Beautiful weather, great time. Sharing with Sister and hubby and then with niece and family. Good to be on the water again.

Harvey, did you leave your rig at Chinook? If so, did it appear to be safe? I recently was prepared to launch across the river from there at the county ramp and the river patrol told me it wasn't secure and they even had theft in broad daylight there from there vehicles so I didn't launch, wasted two days of parking fees, and went down to Cathlamette. I would really like to find a secure ramp in that area to do a trip upriver like you did.

Sea Angel got a run today to the First Island of the Chesepeake Bay Bridge Tunnel and around the Lynnhaven/Broad Bay area. I had our pastor and First Mate with me. The temps were in the lower 60s with light winds. All systems a GO!

As I pulled from the marina a 27ft SeaSport passed and headed to the CBBT fishing area to join the gang out there as we headed east to Lynnhaven Bay.

OH MY! I really do have to get out more. The engines only have 425hrs; only 25hrs since last serviced, last November. Boy they ran fine.

Maybe it is time to think of letting Sea Angel find a home where she will be used more. Gosh knows there is enough stuff on her to make any cruiser happy, as she has me.

I did park at Chinook Landing both days. Talked to a few locals and asked that. No problems reported from them. I did see 2 patrol cars go through Saturday. There was a Fish and Game fish counter there Friday probably all day. He was there when I left and when I got back. Spent 20 minutes looking over around and into the C-Dory. I think he was fishing for where my fishing gear was because I told him I wasn't fishing. he got interested in the boat and came onboard to have a look see. The place looked nice and clean, fair amount of fishing traffic, but the lot was only 1/4 full, mostly due to poor fishing and cool weather I think.

I would like to go back and run all the way up to Beacon Rock park some day. Also, down through town and around Sauvies Island. Amazing how shallow the Columbia is in places. Glad I had a current plotter chip.

BTW, Launch at Chinook is free. $5.oo to park for the day though, and that is by machine on a credit card.

Hope that helps some,

Harvey

There is another ramp I considered. Oregon side too, about at the west end of the airport, about 42nd Street. There is a marine patrol office there, and I would think it would be secure if any would. I liked Chinook better because it is more protected from the current and wind. It is shallow getting in and out of the launch area there though.

"County ramp across the river" I don't really know anything about it.

Hope that helps too.
