So I finally got an ipad2

So, admittedly behind many folks I finally got an iPad2. What a great device. I've been setting up my email accounts, trying out various apps and in general getting amazed at every new thing I find.

One of the things I want to use it for when we get our next boat is to tether it with my iPhone 4S or use any wifi connection and access my Slingbox Solo when traveling so we can watch our Time Warner cable TV from the boat. We've always done this in the past with a laptop. I can use a downloaded Slingbox player program or watch over Internet Explorer from any windows based PC.

Turns out the way to do this from an iPad is to use a Slingplayer app that Sling provides. It costs $29 US while the Windows based tools to do this are free.

I use Time Warner Cable for television, high speed internet, and telephones. They have a free iPad app that I can use to watch most of the cable channels I have. I can't watch pay per view movies or local channels but for my needs when traveling, it's perfect. The video quality is super and it's very easy to use.

The results for me? I'm very happy with Time Warner but probably won't buy another Slingbox. I probably would have bought a new Slingbox soon anyway but the $29 charge for what should be a free app just rubs me the wrong way.

At any rate, I can't say enough about how pleased I am with the iPad!

Good call on nixing the Slingbox. I bought the app. and it's buggy, as is my Slingbox connection. I'm waiting for Xfinity to allow me to watch my tv live. Until then, I'll "live" with Netflix and other options while on the pond or the road.

I just walked through the steps to receive the free book.
I downloaded it last night and installed without any problems
Maybe something was changed.
There is a Live Chat box to answer questions

I sure wish we could get SOME sort of cable/fios/DSL out here where we live. The only option is HughesNet and DirecTV. Very expensive and HughesNet is not very fast. Cell Phone isn't great either. Maybe some day!

If you like Tom Clancy, here is a free audiobook

Brent – thanks for the link. I listened to Red Storm Rising by Tom Clancy and really liked it. This will give me a chance to listen to another of his books without having to pay for it. Chances are I will be getting more of his audio books if this one is as good as Red Storm Rising.

Welcome

Another good book is River of Doubt describing Theodore Roosevelt's Amazon adventure.

He nearly died on the Rio da Dúvida (“River of Doubt”)

The small price you pay for the beautiful part of the country you live

I have downloaded books at free WiFi hotspots. You travel alot and here is a list of free wifi hotspots
http://www.wififreespot.com/
or go to McDonalds or Starbucks

Every public library should have free net access, too

Audible has a better app but Music app is fine.

Isn't it great that you turn the Ipad, Iphone or ITouch and start using it!

Enjoy and shown others!

Thanks Brent. Read the TR book, very good!

We do have free WiFi at the library but I work about 4-5 hours a day in my office and use the internet all the time. I think they'd take umbrage with my moving the office there!

I've also got a local wireless service but it's less than satisfactory too. I can usually get things I need to do done though.

Yes, it's worth it! :thup

Charlie – I know just how you feel. I have been stuck with Hughes or Wildblue since 1995. In 1995 it was great but now Satellite internet sucks.

I have been researching the MiFi connection through Verizon. I have AT&T cell but do not get it at home and even offered AT&T a site on a hill on the back 40 for a tower site just to get cell reception and internet. I use to get reception when I had the old analog bag phones but when they went digital I no longer get a signal on my home place. AT&T has promised me I would have cell reception soon, but that has been going on for more years than I can count. A few years ago Verizon installed a tower a few hills from me so I can get a weak signal from them but it is only 3G. I have a couple of friends that were in the same situation as me and both have the MiFi from Verizon and used a Wilson amplifier and antenna and now get a 4G signal with internet speeds of up to 5meg. I have been with the same carrier since the late 80’s but will be switching all my phones to Verizon and also get the MiFi for my home internet connection. A 5meg connection will be 7 to 10 times faster than I get at home but only 1/10th the speed I get at my office. I am tired of waiting.

Thanks Dave. I think in 1995 many of us were using dialup 1200 baud modems! My verizon cell signal (on a Droid X) goes from 1X to full bars on a 3G signal all the time, No telling when it will do that. Not sure whether it's atmospherics or something else. I can sit in one place and it varies. I do get a good signal some of the time, maybe the Wilson system is the thing to do..

What 12 volt cigarette charger has a long enough chord to use when the ipad 2 is mounted on your boat? Any recommendations for 12 volt chargers?

I use this and it works well. I can keep my iPhone and iPad charged at the same time and only use one 12V outlet.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003PU ... 00_details

I had an extra 12V outlet installed just to the left of my chart plotter (mounted on the horizontal surface) and it is a great location for keeping devices charged.

Make sure to get a charger with a 2.1 amp outlet otherwise it might not keep up with the battery drain when using the iPad.

We use a 400w inverter plugged the 12 volt D.C. outlet with a six way surge strip plugged in to the inverter. That way you can use your standard 120 volt plug in charger, along with being plug camera battery, telephone chargers, cpap machine, wireless modem etc. We use the same setup in the truck when traveling longer distances.
