So, admittedly behind many folks I finally got an iPad2. What a great device. I've been setting up my email accounts, trying out various apps and in general getting amazed at every new thing I find.
One of the things I want to use it for when we get our next boat is to tether it with my iPhone 4S or use any wifi connection and access my Slingbox Solo when traveling so we can watch our Time Warner cable TV from the boat. We've always done this in the past with a laptop. I can use a downloaded Slingbox player program or watch over Internet Explorer from any windows based PC.
Turns out the way to do this from an iPad is to use a Slingplayer app that Sling provides. It costs $29 US while the Windows based tools to do this are free.
I use Time Warner Cable for television, high speed internet, and telephones. They have a free iPad app that I can use to watch most of the cable channels I have. I can't watch pay per view movies or local channels but for my needs when traveling, it's perfect. The video quality is super and it's very easy to use.
The results for me? I'm very happy with Time Warner but probably won't buy another Slingbox. I probably would have bought a new Slingbox soon anyway but the $29 charge for what should be a free app just rubs me the wrong way.
At any rate, I can't say enough about how pleased I am with the iPad!
