Sitka, Alaska any C-Brats ?

Steve-

Chivita Dave has been a real contributor from time to time here on the C-Brats.

Another Sitka C-Brat is computer-rooter who we've also heard from, from time to time.

You can also find other Alaskans in SE Alaska by using the BRAT MAP at the top of the Homepage.

Good Luck!

Joe.

Thank you for the replys. Just so you guys know...when I was a young man 18-19, 1964-1965 I was stationed in the Coast Guard on the light Cape Decision. We received mail and supplies every two weeks, weather permitting. I was there 11 months and 10 days. There were four of us. Yesterday I searched Cape Decision and was blown away. Look it up. I want to take gismo my C-Dory 16' and myself back there. So, I'm just asking around.
Thanks

What an experience that must have been, Steve. I remember motoring past Cape Decision in June '78. Spent a good part of the summer in Port Alexander working and living with three other guys.

OK...After researching a possible trip I have come up with this plan which is to depart Tahoe the first week in June. Tow all the way to Prince Rupert BC. Board the Alasken Ferry with 40' (truck and boat) to Ketchikan. Take the Intercoastal Ferry across to Hollis( 40' truck, trailer and boat) on Prince of Wales Island. Prince of Wales in one of the 3 largest islands in the US. 140 miles of road. Pictures are beautiful. The northern most point is closest to Cape Decision. My plan is to spend about two weeks fishing, exploring the coves and inlets around Prince of Wales and once again spending time at Cape Decision. This appears to be all intercoastal travel. I have a small and light popup camper shell on my Dodge Dakota so I won't be spending to many nights in the CD 16'. I do have a camper back for the Dory. Ferry travel with truck boat and trailer isn't cheep.
Can any one give me some feel back on this plan?

I don't see any problems with the trip--but don't forget the brown bears (Grizzley). I have heard stories about them swimming to fishing boats and trying to board them--never saw anything like that, but I would be cautions about food and personal protection, with a pop up camper and the 16. We met one couple who was cruising that area with a 16 foot whaler--slept on the beach much of the time--but occasionally had to use a tent on the whaler because of the bears!

You are correct that the ferry trips are expensive---also be prepared to back off the ferry. We have taken boats on the ferries and had to back off several times--depends on where they put you and which ferry.

I would attempt to see as much of the coast while you are up there.
Remeber that Kayakers go all of the way from Seattle to Haynes or Skagway-so almost anything is possiable!

Thanks..Sounds better all the time. Bears are all over Tahoe. We have crosswalks on the HWY for them. We put our garbage in bear boxes. My dog hates them and they don't like her much either. Going to meet with some people on Christmas Day who have covered much of this trip. The committement comes when I book the ferrys.

My eight year old son and I spent three weeks exploring PWI two summers ago with our 14 foot skiff.Best time of our lives and plan to go back with the dory. The "road system" will get you to the North end of the island to Labouchere Bay.LOTS of big potholes make carrying multiple spares for both truck and trailer a must as there are no services except at Naukati and gas at Whale Pass.Bring everything you need with you.Was very slow going with the road conditions and construction but worth it and an awesome island with endless protected coves to explore.Good luck.

Hello Steve,

I visited POW extensively last summer and the past few years. I really enjoy Craig and all of the west and south part of the island. Having "the rig" will allow you all kinds of options. My wife and I have been in most of the port communities by boat and rented a car last year and drove all over the "Rock". Great fishing, crabin' and shrimp if your into that. The maze of islands is wonderful crusing as well. The interisland ferry service opened up from Coffman Cove to Wrangell and Mintakof last summer.

Locals told me that there are only Black Bears on POW - and lots of them. We saw them most every drive and from the boat. They are hunted and the ones we saw pretty much took off. The island seems to be a deer factory as well so we watched our driving. The launch at Nakatui (Knock -a -tee) looked good to me for a trip north and your rig would be much safer than at Labouchere Bay. There is no settlement at Labouchere Bay and a tough road to get there. The cruise north up El Cap passage and Dry Pass is protected and just spectacular. Leaving the pass its about 30 NM up to Port Protection Wooden Wheel Cove where Jack Mason has fuel, laundry, showers, a liquor store and anything else. You are two miles from Point Baker where most folks go but with your size you get to go anywhere you please ( A delight of C-Dorys). From Woden Wheel cove's state float you can look across to where you want to go. Jack's dock is full of free advice. Baranoff is full of Brown Bears, I always stay on my boat but feel safe.

I think that your plan is great. You have me tempted to take my rig there as it opens up a ton of great options.

Shawn...Great info. I launched gismo in Santa Gruz Harbor last fall. Camped at new Brighten. Fished off of the mile bouy and a ways up off light house pt. Spent many years in Santa Gruz. My father was from SC, his father and his father moved to SC in 1850.
Come on to PW. Fly up and we use my boat. Show me around.
Thanks again for the info

Hi Steve,
We Did the Price Rupert to Ketchikan to Hollis trip in July of 2005. Towed the 22' Angler with 1 ton diesel Dodge with camper on it.
POW hooked us we bought land in Coffman Cove 9/05 and have built a 1248 Sq ft. home. We have not had time to even get on to the C-Brat site we have been so busy between working at Prudhoe Bay 3 weeks on 3 weeks off and building the past year and a half have just slipped by. There is a magic that you feel but cannot really put into words that will grab you when you get here.
If you have time and sync up with my work - time off schedule we would welcome you to Coffman Cove.
Don't hesitate the trip is worth the effort and cost. You will find that there are a number of C-Dorys up here at Klawock and Craig. If you need specific information please e-mail us
@ secdc@msn.com.

Steve,
You will enjoy that trip. Myself and two other couples did that about five years ago. Shawn is right, I understood there were only black bears on POWs. A small town north of Craig called Klawock has a camp ground with a good long floating dock in protected waters. To stay in the camp ground or tying up to the dock is very reasonable. One of the guys we went with moved a fifth wheel up there on a barge. He left his boat there after a good summer of fishing and crabbing. His Christmas card had a picture of a 150 lb Halibut. They plan on spending all their summers there from now on. The silver salmon run is the best fishing in the later summer. They have a boat to take their guests out fishing. Having a crab pot is a must.
The Indians named the town of Klawock after what the crows ( Birds) up there will holler at you. Skip is the guys name that owns the place. If interested in the rest of the info to contact them, just ask and I will dig it up for you.
enjoy
Captd :D
