Securing to a buoy

Thanks Mike

I wasn't being critical, just thinking that I was having an attack of incomprehension. Somehow they are becoming more common these days. 😕

Need a bit of advice please. I am making a new mooring line, with snubber, for when I tie up to a buoy. When the line is taut, how far do you think the bow of the boat should be from the buoy? 10', 15' 20' ?

Martin.

There are a number of factors--including what the space is between the buoys and or shore/other obstructions. Wind, current etc.

You don't want it too close, or too far away. Not good to have the boat surge up on a buoy--and you certainly don't the boat banging into the buoy. If you are going to use a pool noodle a short line would be best.

Generally I have let a boat run back about 10 feet from the buoy.

We're also of the ten foot variety but like most things boating "it depends" on the crowds, weather, etc, etc. I would not want to be so close that my boat would bang into the buoy nor so far that We run the risk of hitting another boat in tight moorings.
