Seasport rumor

Heard on a fishing board that Seasport is having some trouble. Evidently they sold Boondocks, but may continue selling boats through the factory or something. Anyone know if there's any truth to any of that?

Hi,
When S.S. first bought C-Dory a friend traveled out to the Seattle area to test ride a Rosbourgh and look at the S.S. facilities where they build boats. When my friend asked who to contact about buying a C-Dory he was told to contact S.S. directly. Now maybe they were going to funnel that though the dealer network but who knows. Certainly they could have funneled him to contact the closest dealer to his home state of Virginia. But from what's been said previously on this site. I could be wrong, but I don't think any dealers have an actual agreement with S.S. Just continuing on with what had been established previously. At least they asked about what we thought about the logos on the seats. Certainly that leaves the door open for them to deal direct. From what we've seen as far as info coming from the factory I for one would not expect the factory to handle this hot potato any time soon. If they holler let them go!

I did not realize that the Lindhout family had only owned SeaSport since 2000 (if the article is correct.) Who was the previous owner and why did they sell?

Wright Brothers sold Sea Sport to Lindhout in 2000. Lindhout owns the property where the factory is located. The name Wright is still on the mailbox located in front of Sea Sport on the Guide Meridian. Wright brothers started out making shower stalls way back when. They did whatever it took to stay in business. Eventually ended up building boats.

all boats orca, c-dory,seasport,and osprey will be at the Bellingham plant. The wright Brothers wanted to retire and sold the company. Alot of people were upset because Island marine center was removed as a dealer when the wright brothers sold the company. Thats a another story. The quality of Seasport never change in fact they improved. And alot of the origanal workers are still there today. I hope they continue building a great product.

As it stands today:

Boondocks has been closed, and SeaSport brand boats will be sold factory direct.

C-Doy, Osprey and Skagit Orca will continue to be available only through dealers, and will not be sold factory direct.

That is good.....I think it is the Dealers that make up a good portion of the "good will" of the boat...and the "family"...It is important that we protect them.

Selling "factory direct" is no good..

Hi,
I guess you could say selling direct just ain't Wright. Bless the dealers with C-Dory stock on the ground. We won't be able to take another round of where is my warranty and who is my boats new daddy if the current dodads take the fall. I sure hope it was not adding the C-Dory emblems on the seats that caused all the trouble. :?

OK, it makes sense now. A SeaSport owner in Port Alberni gave me the following trail:

1. The left Wright brothers (as opposed to the right Wright brothers who built airplanes,) started and built SeaSports.

2. The dealer in Bellingham sold so many SeaSport boats that they decided to buy SeaSport. I guess this would be Boondocks/Lindhout. I don't know if they had a dealer network, outside of Bellingham.

Now for C-Dory:

3. The Lindhouts got C-Dory molds, parts list, jigs AND a good dealer network.

So if your SeaSport dealer outlet (Boondocks) goes broke, close that down, and do factory direct. If you still have C-Dory dealers that are interested, one would be crazy to turn them down. A boat sold is a boat built.

Does the above sound correct? If not let us know.

I can only hope that the SeaSport factory gets through this depression. Remember, don't start wars. It may look good on your resume, but it's bad for the economy.

Not sure I can divulge the source of this info but I have considerable faith in his reliability.

To build simular size boats, a Sea Sport takes about 150 man hours of construction. The C-Dory Cruiser equivalent takes just over 400 hours.* Can't blame them for wanting to make some changes -- will need to, if they are going to be at all competitive. None of us want to give up our C-Dorys, and we all want to see the line continue, so we need to support both the dealers and the manufacturer. Time to become (as if we aren't already, ambassadors of the line if you will.

* This is not to say the Sea Sport is less well built, just the manufacturing is much more streamlined. I have seen several Sea Sports up close, and they are very well put together and trimmed out.

Harvey,

Whom ever your confidential source is they are unfortunately incorrect, the average time a 24' XL Seasport takes us to build is approximately 675 man hours, the equivilant 25' cruiser takes approximately 500 man hours to build. The main build difference is how we construct the internal components, each Sea Sport interior is stick built in our woodshop prior to lamination even beginning, then the parts are encapsulated in binderless chop, installed in the hull and finally at every contact point on the hull they are glassed into place, while a C-Dory at this present time is a molded interior.

Now, there seems to be a lot of conjecture going on right now which isn't good for anybody, all we are doing is consolidating business's and opening a parent company that will harbor and protect all companies involved. This will make for better brand management, allowing us to maintain each brands individual charateristics that make them unique, and offer better service to both customers and dealers alike. Those that have spent the time to interact with us here know that we are and will continue to build each line stronger and better than before, utilizing cutting edge techniques like resin infusion and more durable materials like Divinicyl cores. This will enhance the value of existing product, and provide new customers with a stronger more durable product, no matter what brand you are looking at.

I appreciate everybody's questions and comments and please don't hesitate to send whatever thoughts that you might have directly to me.

Thank you for the statement. It'll stop a lot of BS (or not, as the case may be.) I appreciate it as I've been through three owners, with SeaSport being the 4th. You've been building fine boats and I hope you continue.

It's nice to hear from the factory on a topic like this.

Hi,
I guess this rumor thread needs to end. I was going to try and post something funny about a possible hostile take over with James of Wild Blue in Charge of marketing, Boris as director of purchasing etc. Not funny now. Harvey got put in the corner with a time out. Scott should really have included his contact infomation. All kidding aside I hope S.S. makes it. The next two or three years are going to be tough.
