Screws in hull and other Q's

Hi All:
I have a '92 CD 16 and see that there are things like battery and gas tank hold downs screwed into the bottom.
There are also other holes which have been filled with something.
Since I think that the cockpit floor is also the bottom of the boat, how is this possible? How thick is the bottom hull?
I understand it is cored, but it would seem to me to be a better solution to attach starboard to the floor and use that to
hold items that need to be screwed.
How have others dealt with this?
Will 5200 adhere starboard to the floor?
Many questions for such a small vessel.
Thanks for any insight,
Bill

Could be almost any sealant/bedding compound/filler, etc.

Rather than having ribs and/or stringers the hull is cored, making it thick and therefore stiff.

How thick is the bottom hull? 1-1/2-2"!!!

I understand it is cored, but it would seem to me to be a better solution to attach starboard to the floor and use that to hold items that need to be screwed.
Yes, in some places where the extra thickness of the starboard wouldn't be a problem.

How have others dealt with this?

Drill out amuch larger hole than the screw needs, clear out the balsa around this hole back a ways from the new hole, fill it with epoxy filler (eg. MarineTex), then drill pilot holes for the original screws needed.

Will 5200 adhere starboard to the floor?

Yes, with some abrasion applied to both parts. A router can cut out dovetail groves in the starboard to get some extra bite.

Many questions for such a small vessel.

Thanks Joe:

Thanks for the great advice and info about the hull.
Will proceed from here.
The great thing about a previously owed vessel is discovering
all the unknowns.
This will be the fifth time I've done it.
Thanks, gotta love this knowledge base.

Joe,
As usual, has the correct answers. I would fill the existing holes with epoxy, after boring them out oversize and under cutting. Then re attatch the screws. The Starboard adhesion is iffy, but will work with the under cuts--usually screws are added (again bored out and filled with epoxy).
