saftey class

That was within an inch and a half of your eye. Glad you don't have to wear a "pirate's" patch over one eye!
I'm thinking that it is time for you to quit working on your boat and go fishing! :thup

Tom. I am glad we have been friends for years and one night over a round table late night or early morning in Auburn WA ...at one of our first Seattle Boat Show Gatherings we just figured it out we were not going to agree on everything in life (would that not be boooooring??).....but, a lot of the stuff we were target on and locked in 100%

So, with you posting that pic and being man enough to say in this open format.... you screwed up for some reason .....yet unknown, but the results will show on your face for a while and as pointed out above, you today can still see out two eyes.

What a blessing for forgiveness for being stupid and doing what we know in our hearts is wrong, and maybe even inconvienant at times......your results beat the $tuff out of loosing your eye. Just even one of them and you are blessed to have two pretty good ones if you like me do not screw up.

Like Dad said to me when I was making safety calls in his shop when learing to use things while building out a 46 Willis Jeep for us to off road in.. He would state boldley and clearly as to be understood by anyone with a hint of understanding the english language no matter where you were raised.......

"Son....if you are going to be stupid, you gotta be tuff.....and realise at the end of the game, you are not going to have all your toys because you have been stupid and tore up what you were blessed with."

Love and miss Ole Pops... particuarly when boating season really kicks off each year.

He had such a way of saying no without saying no and the ability to make you as an individual think and feel that it was your call....with what ever cost, hurt of consequences your call caused as an individual. Things were not others fault, but our own. Make a descision and live with all of it son. Now, who can argue that? Pretty damn simple when you shake it all out.

To Martin ALOYSIUS Byrd.....and his way of teaching us life! :beer :beer Cheers Pops...

And to my C-Dog/Brat Friend Tom who just allowed us to share another moment together so more than likely, we have some other C-brats that will take the time to put the shield behind us on on the hook and move it to cover our face AND BOTH EYES rather than that little hook we put up to hang it on.

Tom and friends I am taking the time to do this cause I found myself less than two weeks ago doing a "single quick grinding job"....with my safety goggles less than 10 feet way in the same tool bag I pulled my grinder out off....and took a good hit in the cheek rather than the eye only to bleed a bit.....rather than just like Tom...another bit up....and BINGO...no right eye. So, with Spring Boat Prep and grinders near for the season, two of us have gotten lucky and did not loose an eye.......WHO WANTS TO REALLY BE FIRST AT THIS...

Drifting with two good eyes and a bit of laughter at my friend Tom who knew better, has taught folks better (ouch) but went stupid and went at it unprotected while knowing better....just like me.

Fits right in to the stupid hurts, but, again, we should all gain from this...even if it is a good laugh at Tom's excpense, and me being just as stupid and lucky lately but did not share it here. I wonder today why not. I guess cause I know better.....as do all of us who take it upon ourselves to grind things out.... even the grit and stuff off our hulls having the protection, but just not using it.

Thanks Tom. Cheers and I look forward to our next toast! :beer
Byrdman

Byrdman...grinning and learning to wear those things....even with the little 5 minute project.

In my younger days I'd take personal safety for granted; "It's never gonna happen to ME..." Luckily, I've become wiser in my middle yrs. Eyes, ears, feet, hands, back...name it and I try to protect it.

Glad it wasn't worse.

Thanks for the reminder, Tom. Now that you have spread the good advice here, if anyone else asks, tell 'em it's a dueling scar.

"Dueling? What was the fight over?"

"The guy asked too many nosey questions."

In our family, we call it "tuition": something you pay to learn. Glad your tuition wasn't higher, my friend.

Take care,
Jim

Its pats fault.. if he had only maned up enough a told his tale two weeks ago just maybe I would have be more careful... well maybe not.

I have never believed that is a embarrassment to screw up, only to handle it badly. You don't hide it or lie about it. Lying to your self will only cause you to get hurt again.

Last night I was using a grinder with a wire brush wheel to remove the old glue and wood from the cabin door window frame. I could not or did not bother to clamp the frame down to the table. So I was holding the frame with one hand and the grinder with the other. As I got to the corner of the frame the grinder jumped and hit the table, pulled out of my hand and jumped off the table and in to my face. I own safey glasses but not a sheild but i still should have had them on. Had it hit me in the eye things could have and probely would have been very differnet.

My grand father would watch me and my brother, and I assume my father, do something wrong until we screwed up and then proclaim " I knew that would happen". and i asked once " then why did you not tell me?" "cause you would not listen, some people have to pee on the electric fence themselves." that has always stuck with me. You have to learn by doing but you can learn from others mistakes just as well and it dont hurt as much.

So you all be carefull out there as you get the boats ready for the spring season. And dont feel bad for me, all wounds heal and chicks love scares. well she better I have a lot of them.

Tom, I know Susan loves you, scares and scars and all, but am so glad that red mark is all she has to love from this episode. Love your attitude toward it -- it is a reminder and inspiration for all of us.

Warren

Geez Tom, be careful! That was a close call for sure. Thanks for sharing your safety lesson with us, I guess your next purchase will be a face shield.

Now take Dave's advice and put that boat in the water!

My boss thinks I should report Susan for abuse or just do as I'm told, one or the other.

you cant tell in the pictures but the nose is the worse part. took a long while to get it to stop bleeding. This morning it still stings as the skin in crusting over. I will need to get some vitamin e gel on the way home. really helps with the scaring.

Most of my clients are ex-military and have no symptom for self inflected wounds.

Glad it missed your eye. Ouch!

Your thread is timely...I'll try to contribute a safety lesson as well. Last weekend meeting the wife in town I foolishly tried to stop a heavy metal door from slamming in strong wind. I stopped it alright...with the end of two fingers. This picture is after a week of healing. I've broken bones in multiple places and that hurt less than this injury. Within 5 minutes I had a bag of ice on them and a dirty martini to help with the pain.

Wow Tom, glad you're OK. That could have been a lot worse. Tell Susan to hit you where it doesn't show...

A friend of mine was redecking his porch a few years ago and cut off a few finger tips with his skill saw. Before he could scoop them up to take to the hospital to be reattached (I think that's possible), his dog ran over and scarfed them up. He was in the habit of throwing pieces of hot dog to his dog to eat.

Again, glad you're OK!

Charlie

Thank you all for the concern.

Matt , what color of nail polish is that? dumb ass blue? i lost a toe nail once that looked like that. dropped a glass casserole pan on the end of it.

Charlie. dog, mans best friend?? a navy friend of mine was working in the ships wood shop making some thing and cut off two finger tips off his left hand. In the shock he picked them up and placed them in his month, wrapped his hand and walked to sick bay. He has no idea why he did it.

Tom,

Glad your going to be OK. The scars, will heal, and the lesson is learned. Thanks for sharing, It is a good lesson for all of us.

OMG! Somehow, "No! Bad dog!!" doesn't seem strong enough. Someone has to ask: was the dog a pointer? I know - back to my corner.

I read that to Joan and Izzy. Joan had the same OMG reaction I had; little Izzy said, "I would never eat any of your body parts... unless you forgot to feed me."

Best wishes,
Jim

Jim
No he wasn't a pointer but he loved Stevie Wonder's first hit single.

If I remember correctly, the dog was a cross between a setter and a pointer. Usually he just set there and pointed at the hot dogs...

But, you may well ask, what does this have to do with Tom nearly losing an eye? VERY LITTLE

And now back to the Safety Thread!
