Replace broken port window #2 on a CD22

Has anyone had to replace a broken side window - over the weekend someone thru ? rock and broke the fixed window in the port slider window unit?

I am trying to get thru to CDORY but suspect I need to order glass from their supplier?

Local glass repair told me they would also have to order it since the glass is tempered.

I tried removing the whole unit - even with the screws removed it is very solidly glued into the fiberglass cab.

I would definitely get a hold of C-Dory but if you're sent to Diamond Sea Glaze, Kim is the man to talk to at 800-770-0455: very helpful and reliable. With shipping from Canada etc. you might be better off getting a local glass shop to cut the proper fit and send it out to be tempered. Another option would be to have the local glass shop cut automotive saftey glass (not tempered but glass sandwiching a plastic film) to fit instead of tempered. I haven't been to the C-Dory Factory for over a year but when last there, they had a bunch of "extra" windows of all descriptions. I'd try phone/e-mail, etc. I'm pretty sure they'd have them and would ship one.

You might also try a local auto glass outfit. They have safety glass--and you definately want safety glass.

Real bummer that someone threw a rock!
 
Our CD-22 manual details the procedures you need to follow in order to
get another window from DSG. Basically, they need a tracing of
the hole to make sure they get the exact right window. Let me know
if you need more info and I can look it up in the manual - which
is on the boat.

Thanks for all the information from everyone:

I contacted CDory and they referred to Diamond SeaGlaze - Kim was very helpful there - window is $45 and the cheapest shipping $51. I decided to go with their window as the closest glass repair would have cost a lot of labor and time due to our location.

Kim explained the process of putting in the window - so I will let you know how it goes next week when we install it.

We had a small window broken out on a Searay a few years ago. Cost nearly
$400 to have the glass made and installed. Two holes were needed, which
added to the price...But, anyhow, going local isn't always cheaper...:-(

I appreciate the suggestions about window replacement - Kim At Diamond SeaGlaze in BC shipped the most economical way - arrived in 48 hours- thank you

Lessons learned in installing window-

I applied duct tape to broken window both sides to keep glass out of Marina and prevent more shattering - removed all the rubber spacing and plastic spacing underneath the window for thorough cleaning. Use duct tape to pick up glass the vacuum could not reach in the groves.

Then the window just seemed about 2 mm too tall to fit - so after pushing and pulling for a while I used my old Toyota jack that can be cranked up slowly -Tied the jack on to the boat with line to decrease risks of dropping it overboard and put cutting board above jack on window and below to protect sill. A few gentle twists and window fit fine - without permanently distorting frame. - Kim told me to just calk the inside with Silicone. Works fine now.

How did you remove the window frame or did you? Several window rubbers on my CD22 are shrinking and need replacement. I found replacement rubber through an earlier thread but can't get the frames to break loose from the boat. What ever sealer they used really works. My CD22 is a 1990 so there has been some changes since then. I did manage to replace the front center window with one that opens but I can't get the other windows out. Any ideas?

Actually Kim at Diamond SeaGlaze told me to not remove the frame. I choose to remove the inside frame that was bolted to the glued in outer frame, so I could have better access to the glass fragments. I would call Kim and ask him. I added my phone notes from the call to Kim below his contact information. - The slider windows have a plastic U shaped channel spacer below them - I removed it initially to clean the window gutter, then slid it underneath once the window was in place - that will probably only apply to slider window

He suggested pull out the black rubber sealing - short one on top and long one on the bottom
Remove the vertical post
Clean out the glass and old silicone sealer
Insert new tempered glass
Insert the vertical post on the bow side of the window
Seal the inside with black 3M Marine Silicon sealer
