What a night in Boston. The ambient temp was in the teens and we had Gale Force winds with gusts to 40 knots. When crossing the harbor into the wind the spray would immediately freeze when it hit the windows/windshield. I had to climb up on the bow several times to scrape the windshield. I would only do this tied up to the dock of course. It was just bitterly cold and even working aboard a heated vessel I was dressed for skiing. On these boats the heat only works when the engine is warm from running at cruise rpm. When I'm sitting at the dock for extended periods there is no heat.
While appreciated, it amazes me what the 20 something ladies will wear in that kind of weather. One rather large girl fell as she boarded the boat and I had to catch her.
I had an exciting 3 second maneuver as well. I had to pass behind a large commuter cat with jetdrives. It was tight quarters for both of us in a narrow channel but the wind was such that the Captain really hit the throttle as I was passing behind him. I was immediately blown toward some docked boats and I had to nail the throttle with a vector to clear the other vessels.
It was a long night. I can't imagine the guys who cruise in these conditions for fun!
