Question regarding registration (buying out of state)

Hi everyone, me again...:)

I came across this link while researching boat reg in Mn.

I'm assuming the dual axle trailer for the 22 is considered 3000+ pounds, thus a yearly tag. Also, if Mn doesn't collect sales tax on used boats (how that's possible in broke America 2010 is beyond me) will/can California come hunting me down for sales tax? (the state I bought the boat in)

I know, this is all boring/hassle stuff no one wants to think or worry about. The sooner I get all this in order, the sooner I can focus on boating.

I can't speak for MN but in CA you only pay sales tax on used boats/ vehicles when you register at the DMV. So, we won't track you down... :wink:
 
Personally, I'd make the assumption that the trailer is under 3000# and go that way. That's a ton and a half. And with aluminum trailers for 25's at 800#, you're safe.

The only way Calif figured out how to collect the "use" tax on private vehicle sales is at registration, and they're quite good at that. They even have a form that you fill out for you to tell them how much you paid. That's a form of liars poker.

We bought a motorcoach at a rally in California and had to take delivery in Nevada to avoid paying CA tax, even though the coach would be registered in another state. Never ran into that before in any other state. No idea if it was a sales tax, use tax, or registration they were after. I can understand Brenton's question.

If that 3,000 lb figure is for the GVW rating of the trailer on a 22, I would think you are certainly over that weight rating. If it is for the weight of the trailer only, you are below that weight.

Minnesota... only 8 more months of winter before boating season! :wink:

If the boat sale was private in Calif--very unlikely that you will be caught by sales tax. If via a dealership--then most likely the dealer would have taken the tax at the time of sale.

Just keep the boat out of Calif. for 6 months at least.

I got caught, by the law change and a couple of days. I thought I had kept my C Dory 25 out of Calif. the required 6 months. But since the law changed from a year after my purchase date, they hit me for sales tax. OK--I paid it--had bills of sale etc. Then the county (Orange) came after me for personal property tax--and they valued the boat at twice what I paid for it....no arguing that I got a "good deal" and had to repair the boat. They did not budge even with an appeal process....

OH, yeah now I remember why I left California!
