Port and Starboard Cockpit Handrails

Been out of school for the past 4 days due to snow/ice. Have had way too much time to browse and think.

Have any of you with a 22' Cruiser ever considered putting railings around the port and starboard cockpit area, similar to the 25'? Any advantage/disadvantage? Any reason not installed by the factory or offered as an option?

You Brats who own a 25', what do you think of the railings? Glad you have em or wish you didn't? :?:

Just wastin time, or???????

I think the 25 has them due to the higher self bailing floor. The 22's generally have a lower floor although more and more now have the flat raised floor and rails might make more sense.

I think is would make getting on and off of the boat more difficult. They sure would be a good place to hang a fender and not use the stern cleat. Just my quick thoughts.

I can't imagine feeling safe in my 25 without the cockpit railings. The raised floor (as rogerbum stated), due to the selfbailing cockpit makes the railings essential. In fact when I ordered my boat last year, I had an additional stern railing installed. This idea came from another C-Brat though I don't remember who. To me the stern railing is just as essential as the others. As for teflonmom's comment about making getting on and off the boat more difficult on a 22, just leave ample space betweem the end of the railing and the cabin for access (like the 25).

Agree that the railings in the 25 and TC 255 is necessary because of the higher self bailing floor of these boats. I haven't measured the height of the railing vs the gunnel of the 22. I use the railings for the outboard bracket and fish rod holders, as well as hanging lines and fenders--even use it as a cleat when tying up for just a few minutes. I would not add railings to the 22. The cockpit is already safe/deep enough.
