Popeye boat

You can here that and "where's Olive Oyl" over and over while working a boat show . Second most popular comment to "is sooo cute"

So how about using something like that for a boat name? Do we have any now?

According to Wikipedia, Popeye's boat was named "The Olive" , but "Olive Oyl" would be cuter, and leave no doubt!

The Olive, makes me think someone is sloshing around inside the boat full of martinis!

Look what a Google Image Search for Popeye's Boat comes up with:

And I always thought the SeaSport boats had that "Popeye" look. Maybe it's the circles we travel in, but we've never had a "Popeye" comment about Wild Blue. Early on, there were lots of "cute boat" comments... not near as many as our small SunCat sailboat garnered. Most of what we hear about our C-Dory is more along the lines of...

"What a great looking boat! You must be a manly man to pilot such a capable vessel. I have no doubt that women swoon as you motor by and other men wish they were you. I salute your good taste! Your wife is, indeed, a fortunate woman and your cat must be the envy of all the cats in the marina."

At least, that's what my mind hears. 8)

Best wishes,
Jim B (I yam what I yam and that's all that I yam)

Jim is certainly in fantasy mode today, the "cute" boat is the one I usually get, then again that cute look is what convinced the wife to allow me to buy it in the first place, oh and the heater really helped too!

Here's a good name - free of charge:

"Olives and Vermouth"

Ha!

You know it is somewhat comical to hear certain boat names hailing on Ch 16 "Rum Buzz - are you out there?" or "This is Boozer calling Sea Tow - I'm out of gas".

Last weekend I literally heard someone hailing a buddy on Ch. 16 and the vessel name was "Rum Drinks". I wonder if that might give the USCG or local Harbor Master an indication of perhaps alcohol aboard?

Reminds me of a radio 'mayday' we heard while cruising along the Carolina coast - "Help - We're Aground and taking on water - This is Wet Dream"

There wasn't a single reply (not even from the Coast Guard) - so we presume his skeleton still lies in the hull on the sand bar.

Lesson - watch out what you name your boat.

Also - along the Gulf ICW the bridge tenders had a little trouble getting our boat name when El hailed them for a lift. But - she soon caught on that the tows have a 'human' name - like the George W. Watson or some such. So from then on we were the Hal C. Yon -- worked perfectly, the tenders all caught the name, and El often got a radio comment back when, instead of a tow with huge barges coming to the bridge, there was a 22' cruiser. She also often got comments from tow skippers when she called them for 'right-of-way' whistle sides for passages - "A woman! And, ma'am, you'all done hab the nicest accent ah evah heeeerd." She would often get in long 'chats' (off ch 16) with lonely tow skippers.

So - our suggestion - a 'respectful' name for your boat, one that's easy to understand, and ask your gal to be the radio operator.

I have friends with an Arima named the Popeye Maru.

El and Bills comment about a respectful name reminds me of how we became the "Molly Brown". Early candidates were "Liquid Interface" but it sounded too much like "In Your Face". Another was "Equilibrium", but figured that not too many of our southern boys would be unable to pronounce it, much less spell it right. Back in 2000 when we were contemplating a new boat purchase, it was indicated to us that Dory's were unsinkable, which us led to Molly Brown of Titanic fame, and as a consequence to call the dingy "Number 6" since that was supposedly the lifeboat she was rescued in.

Number one comment for our original 22, "IT'S SO CUTE!"

Our Popeye trivia:

Our first "bigger" boat was a 32' Sundowner Tug that we named "Me Ship, the Olive" - which of course Olive Oyl was Popeye's girlfriend and boat name.

After a while we figured out it was too hard to communicate over the radio so we changed it to Brazo (which is Spanish for ARM which are the initials of both of our boys - Alex Robert Meyer & Aaron Robert Meyer).
