Paddles

I have a 22 Cruiser. Sometimes I have gotten into very shallow water. The water was too shallow for my Honda 90.I was thinking about a paddle to help. I do have one. It is an adjustable that I got at WallMart. I do keep it in the port storeage area. I did try it once but found the paddle to be too short. I was thinking about using a push pole . Any comments would help :?

If the water is too shallow for the motor, I'd think that it was too shallow to paddle. A good pole sounds like a good idea. We have a telescoping boat hook, which has also served as a pole, among other things. Good depth sounder, too.

By the way, if you get paddles, how about a pair of those wooden dinghy paddles? They seem longer than a canoe paddle and sturdy.

Waders or hip boots might be a better choice if the bottom is suitable.

Lots of boats in deep south Texas carry a push pole - a long PVC pole with a "T" at the end. If the boat is still floating, it works... won't help much if you're stuck in. Not that I'd know from experience.

I carry a 10 foot 1 1/4" PVC schedule 80 pipe, with a "T" on the bottom, and about a foot of similar pipe, capped on each side of the "T"--also top end is capped (it floats). I also put a tape mark at each foot and half foot. We have some mighty thin water in Florida. This is on my Caracal--an 18 foot single engine cat--Center console, trolling motor in the bow, etc--and made for thin water fishing and traveling....

A boat hook does not have enough area at the end to be an effective push pole. Some folks have glass or carbon fiber poles, and a "Y" at one end, and sharp spike at the other for temporary spudding in while fishing.
