One Wheel Motorcycle

Now we can have the "one wheel or two" discussion. I love this place.

Marty,

I’m with you, but at the same time somewhat confused by the inventor continually referring to this one wheel unit as a “bike”.

So what would be a better (C-Brat) reference?

This will be interesting!

Ron Fisher

Hi Marty, WOW I'm not going there --"one wheel or two" but this thing looks fun. Time for more homework.

Ron, Thanks for sharing this one. it looks cool and it's in our own backyard.

Merry Christmas,

Harvey

“top speed of 25 mph (40 km/h) and a range of up to 30 miles”

Today 25K, next year $3,500.00, will be interesting to see how they do that.

Keeping Portland Weird! Nothing more to say...
I remember they said the same thing when the wheel was first invented. At least I think I remember.

Marty was that the front wheel or back wheel? Were the first ones stone or wood? This seems sort of like a one wheel Segway...I don't think the Segways have come down much in price and the mass proliferation predicted has not occurred.

OK this is an electric unicycle....Now it the weight were cut down--think of the possibilities--take it aboard the C Dory, fit it with paddles instead of a wheel, use it as a dinghy motor, bow thruster, stern thruster, another fitting it becomes a pot hauler or windlass....pull the dinghy up on the sand, and then take off to do the shopping and touring on land!

Here is the next billion dollar invention...wonder what the patten is?

The amount of creative genius in the world astounds me. BUT, I hope his electronics never go south on him. No where to go but down on your face...seems to me. Same with that two wheeled electronically balance thing that came out 10 years ago. Forget the name. It will be interesting to see if it takes off. It would be terrific for urban law enforcement.

Harry: Segway I mentioned above is the two wheel item you refer to.

We see them occasionally--and you can rent them in places, like Angel Island, but have not taken off like anticipated. A lot of reasons--and probably will be the same issues with the Honda clever device which Tom links to or the unicycle...

I think that the biggest hold back for the honda product is the competition, legs

I like the addition of an 8" diameter second wheel with a DC servo motor in its hub to promote horizontal stabilization as well as to provide its rider with auxilliary power to get back home should the primary fail.

The horizontal stabilization method in the one wheel motor cycle seems similar in theory to the Segways, which causes me to wonder what would happen if one runs out of power. Would its occupant do a face plant? It's bad enough to do a face plant with a Segway at 8 MPH, but at 25 MPH? This is where I would concede that "twins" as opposed to a "primary and aux" makes more sense. Personally, I think a compact, fold-up bicycle with a small LIO battery/motor, a lightweight Sterling, or an equally lightwieght conventional gas engine is more practical.

Looks to me that it answers the question nobody asked.

"What this country needs is a good electric unicycle... all those clowns and jugglers aren't getting any younger, you know?"

I like innovation, especially if it makes work easier or faster, or adds something to our quality of life. As many of you know, I enjoy motorcycling... I don't see much about this that looks like fun or efficiency beyond: "Hey, look! I got something really weird here!" The Segway has some practical use, for people who are on their feet all day and need to cover some ground faster than walking (security, delivery). There's a guy at the Friday Harbor marina that uses one. I've seen the city tours by Segway. But, at this point, not a lot of use for most of us. And this unicycle? Yeah, even less use.

Maybe someone will come up with a practical function.

It is the idea--apparently developed by Honda also--which is the break thru. The initial product is way too heavy to be practical for a boat like a C Dory, If you get that down to 40 lbs then it becomes very practical. We had mopeds on our boats we did long distance cursing on. They would go up to 45 mph, and had baskets on the front and back--so could carry a fair amount of load. The range was considerable, and we would go on 100 mile plus trips with them. The weight was just over 100 lbs, and was not easy to manage on a 65 foot boat, with a 13 foot dinghy-

The Honda U3-X weight is only about 22 lbs and a battery "duration" of one hour. The speed is only 3.7 mph, so about a fast walk. The newer unit is a UNI-CUB which seems geared for handicap persons. Apparently no marketing currently--but in the future...lots of options

Is that when you yell swearwords at people in slips on the other side of the marina? I hope you didn't curse too much!

Nope the only cursing, was on board when the anchor got caught under a coral head...while cruising--too fast on the fingers! :-)
