New York State Canal System has reinstated fees for 2008 , in case anyone was interested. john

John -
We had heard there was a problem with the funding under the Freeway System -- are the fees a daily use fee, a lockage fee, a per/ft fee, or ? The broad-scale problems in the economy are definitely spilling over to State and local entities, and I suppose that's the root cause of re-instituting the fees on the canal -- we may find such additional costs for boating all over the country.

Bill &El , go to nyscanals to get the ans. fees are pretty cheap i usually buy the season pass to help support em, but i know in the past you could buy 2-day &10-day passes its pretty reasonable i think considering all the free docking and amenities you get for your buck you know how it goes somebody has to get paid to maintain it and run the locks and so on . i really like it on the canals and hope it continues to operate best whishes & be sure to post if you guys head up this way would be nice to meet and greet you guys mabey do some leg of the canal together or just say hi ? ..... john HEY WAYNE WHO CARES !!! post said if interested -don't see how that reply helps anything my apoligies if it was some kind joke mabey i don't get your sense of humor ?

John,

I think Wayne was joking, which is why he added the smiley face :-)

That's the problem with email and messages, someone can't see your smile or wink or the tone of your voice.

I was joking. As you can see, I live in NY...and the Canal is a waterway I regularly use. So I will buy a seasonal pass.

NY has been trying to promote greater use of the Canal. The fee had resulted in reduced use. So it was waived for a couple of years, and boating went back up. Now, I predict it will go down again.

OK- SARGE. thaths why i said what i said i should have known better DIS-SMISSED !! . sorry wayne no offense i think i need to cut back on my caffine intake or something. BTW i heard the fees were waived because of the flooding & shutdowns on parts of the canal, but cant say for sure just heard that , thats all........... JOHN

There was no connection between the waiving of fees and the flooding that occured last year. They had been waived the previous year as well. The flooding occured after the decision and announcement to continue the waiver another year.

Whatever the fees, the trip through the Eire Canal is one of the best anywhere. Beautiful scenery, great history, friendly people and you get to go through those neat locks.

Boris

Just watch out that they don't sell the canal! You hear rumors of selling toll roads, bridges etc so the city/states can have money for today's projects! :-)....

wouldn't suprize me the way things go these days , mabey they could put in a coupple E-Z passes and go with self serve locks ol: john
