Hi -

After 2 years of looking at this site, I decided to sell my 1999 Chaparral Signature to purchase a 2006 22' Cruiser with a Honda 90 hp. According to the wife this is a downgrade as I am giving up a fridge, microwave, an enclosed head, and shore power for a "rustic" interior and a porta potty :roll:

The previous owner kept the boat very well and dealing with him was a fantastic experience.

Questions:
1. how often do you change the water impeller?
2. what advice do you give me in regards to adding an anchor without drilling (boat does not have one and I boat in the Chesapeake Bay)?

First of all, Welcome and congrats on the boat!

I tend to have my impeller replaced every other year. We put about 100 hours on the boat per year and I am not a wait for failure sort of person. This is a common item to fail for various reasons and if you do the work to inspect it, you might as well change it at the same time.

For an easy-add anchor, many folks simply keep a rode/anchor together in a milk crate or bucket with holes drilled and keep it bungeed up front or store it elsewhere and pass it up through the hatch in the V-berth. Carrying it around the side of the boat is an option too but a bit more of a challenge to your personal balance.

Always good advice from Greg. You can hand the plastic bucket or milk crate up thru the forward hatch, if you are elderly or challenged. (Which probably would preclude drilling holes in the bucket)..

It is unusual to find a 22 without an anchor pulpit/roller. But they are out there. Some set the anchor from the cockpit and then either take the line forward, or have a line already on the bow cleat, and taken around the outside of the bow pulpit to tie an anchor line to.

You may find that pulling an anchor from the bow deck challenging. There are ways around this, using an Anchor ball

I boated many years without a windlass both in racing sailboats up to 45 feet and multiple small power boats...most likely why I have a bad back in my older age.
Strongly consider a pulpit and windlass. When you drill a hole in any cored deck you need to basically route out a little core and fill the area with thickened epoxy.

The next question is how long until you drill a hole in the boat at some point? :D

You can easily add shore power, a refrigerator, and even a microwave...hard to get rid of the porti potty however.

I've enjoyed cruising with my wife on our 22 for about 6 years. Had many power boats and sail boat, but the C-Dory is our favorite for cruising.
I have a simple Danforth style anchor and the chain and line goes down a hawse pipe on the bow. This system requires that you open the hatch on the bow and work the anchor, while standing on the v-berth.
Defender Marine had a boat show sale recently and I purchased the horizontal Lewmar 700 windlass, chain and had then spice the line to the chain. Simply put, I am in the process of installing the windlass right now, because we want to anchor more often, without the hassle of messing with the muddy chain and line. Do I like to drill holes into my boat...no. Will I enjoy doing what other fellow C-Brats do any time they please, at any cove or protected creek, when we travel? The answer is simple yes.
