New regulations for Biscayne National Park (FL)

Biscayne National Park (BISC) will be implementing some new regulations (and enforcement challenges) soon. BISC is situated about fifteen miles south of the Maimi metropolitan area, and is a favorite of thousands of boater's who enjoy the extremely convenient access.

NPS is using a similar closure at Ft. Jefferson (seventy miles off Key West) as its guiding model.

It should be interesting to see how this works out - so close to a metropolitan area.

It all boils down to enforcement, vs voluntary compliance. Old plans have not been respected. We have some of the same type of issues with Gulf Islands National Sea Shore on the upper Gulf Coast. In some ways these restrictions don't go far enough--in others they don't make much sense to many of us.

I see the NPS (and allied agencies), are under staffed--at least for public interface. It comes to mind that on Lake Powell, it was very difficult to find a ranger, yet at the regional headquarters there were many dozens of rangers doing desk work.
 
Lots of problems that are listed already have plenty of laws to cover them. Leaving prop trails in shallow sea grass areas. Anchoring coral areas.
The fish regulations if they had enforcement would probably correct over fishing. Lack of enforcement I see as a major problem with laws on the water and on land. More laws are not the answer in my opinion. If they have to make areas for no fishing is what it takes then have at it. Maryland has some of the toughest gun regulations. Look at what's happening there.
