Hello , I do not yet own a c-dory but plan on getting a 22' within the next 5yrs as I get closer to having more time to spend on it. Three questions:

1) how tall of a boat barn/garage do you need to put a 22' into?
In other words how high off the ground is the roof?

2) Is there an option or have you seen anyone take a small functional trysail to mount on the roof to act as a small kicker? It seems it could be quite useful at times when cruising,even if it only adds a knot or two.

3)Any trips planned to Texas by any members?

Hi Seawhy,

Welcome aboard. There are some C-Dorys in Texas, ours included. The height on a 22 will vary according to the type of top (some have a hi-top option), radar, radar arch, or various other accessories. You could do a search here to find threads on "height on trailer".

A sail on top of a C-Dory in an interesting prospect, and something I've considered in my "what if" thoughts. Working against it: the relatively flat bottom on the C-Dory and no keel. If you were going at any speed over hull speed, the apparent wind would move foreward to the point of always being "sailing up wind." And then there's the support necessary for stepping any kind of mast up on top. One could redesign the boat to work with a functional sail, but then it wouldn't be a C-Dory anymore. :wink: There are a lot of sailors here who know these are powercruisers with a sailing sensibility.

Re: trips to Texas. Check the Brat Map. You'll see some C-Dorys here in the Lone Star State. There are occasionally brats who cruise on the ICW along the coast.

As Jim mentioned, there are a lot of variables in the max height requirement. For instance, my 22 Cruiser, (no radar arch,but with the radar on a short post), and on a "Pacific" single axle trailer with 15" tires, fits into a 10' high 9' wide door. My neighbor's 22 Cruiser with a high arch and radar pretty much fills his 12' door, but his trailer is lower than mine and he has smaller wheels too. Lots of variables, makes for some interesting shopping for sure.

There are versions with no radar, that mights fit into a 9 foot high, and there are modifications that could be done to a trailer to lower the overall hight some. Enjoy your shopping and searching. (Use the search mode on the site here, spend time looking through the photo albums, and check out the boats at a CBGT (C-Brat Get Together) near you. Also, consider joining us at the Seattle Boat Show CBGT in January. Hard to find a nicer bunch of like minded, different folks :wink

You might consider a traction kite, but not a true "trysail". There are many reasons that a sail is not practical on a C dory. If you want a sail boat, or motorsailor in a similar size boat, there are a number of other boats available.
