New member, couple of questions...

Just joined C-Brats so I could get some info. I'm interested in the C-Dory 22 but I'm afraid I may not fit in it. I'm 6'5" tall. Low overheads don't bother me too much as long as I have a comfortable place to sit in the pilot house and can fit in the v-berth up forward with my wife (she's a tiny 5'2" tall). How tight would the 22 feel? I'd consider the CD 25 but it's about $20K (used) out of my price range.

Some C-Dorys have an extended top as an option. This gives 6' 10" clearance in the center aisle of the boat. As far as I know the height on the sides of the cabin (over the seats, dinette, and galley) are the same for all boats.

The berth is 6' 3" from forward to aft. Since it is a v-berth you lie on it at angle so the effective length is a bit more. If you sleep fully stretched out, the berth is probably too small. If you curl up a bit you'll probably have room. The dinette converts to a single berth, but is only 6' 2" long (according to the specs). I don't know if this value excludes the thickness of the fore and aft cushions or not.

Thanks for the information.

Would it be possible to modify the 22's v-berth to gain a couple inches? I've slept in a berth that was just a bit too short and it was -very uncomfortable-. If there isn't any way to give me a full 6'5" bunk I'll probably have to pass on C-Dory's which would be unfortunate as they look to otherwise be perfect for what I want to use it for.

Wonder how it would work out for you to have a cushion on top the porta-potti and sleep along the centerline and your wife on one or the other legs of the "V"?

I did something similar on a 22' sailboat I had a long while back. Managed to extend the berth to almost 7' in length. To this day that was the most comfortable boat I've ever slept on. ;)

Are there any CD22 (or even a CD25) owners in the San Diego, CA area? I'd love to see one in person.

In the menu at the top of every page is a link to "The Brat Map". Click on it and you can find all the San Diego-based boats.

I was thinking of that too - make an extension into the center aisle of the boat and sleep heads forward?

Another option - a bit more involved but has some side benefits too. Some folks have cut out part of the bulkhead between the port side dinette seat and the v-berth (it is not structural). This makes for a more open berth, and perhaps combined with a sliding co-pilot seat (in most boats since 2005 or so) slid aft, you could make an effective extension into the "foot area" of the co-pilot seat (something like the Marinaut does).

Here are tow photos of 22's with a cutout to give you the idea. Your extension would theoretically go in the foot area you see in front of the seat.

Also, here is a photo of a 22 "high top" model. The fellow in the photo (who is annotated for privacy because it's not someone I could contact to ask permission; not because he is a fugitive!) is 6'4" for scale. Not that the windows, door, etc. are still at the same height as the regular top boats, just the center section is raised.

Thanks for the tip Doryman. Found 3 CD22 owners in my area so hopefully one of those is still around.

Good shots of the interior, thanks Sunbeam. Looks like it might not be too tough to alter, but will definitely need to see one in person to see how those modifications might effect the rest of the boat.

You will probably have to have the sliding seat to allow the extension of the bunk, but it will work. My son is 6'4" and about 240 lbs (all muscle), and he is tight in the forward bunk un modified--but has slept there. I would do the cut out. You can modify the seat if you need to. I would also check head room at the seat. I am 6' 2" (or was), and you may be close--but the seat could be lowered.

bigkahuna-

I am 6' 4" and have made a few modifications to fit more comfortably in our 22 Cruiser. I would have loved to find a high top model, but those are newer and seemed rare in California for the year that I was looking.

I usually hunch over while I am driving to see out the windows, so I recently lowered the helm seat a few inches. My wife is only 5'7 and she likes the view better from the lower seat. I have slept in the berth and on the cabin floor on an inflatable air mattress about 60 nights over the last year. We have two small kids, so I can not figure out if it is just the tight quarters or one of them squirming at night that makes things less than comfortable. I am having the cushions reupholstered in the berth and adding 1.5" of memory foam to the top of the pads.

We have talked about removing the divider between the cabin and berth and likely might do so in the future. For now it makes it easy to close up that area at night and put the kids to sleep in the "bedroom."

We have our boat in Huntington Harbor. If you ever want to take a look, let me know. We are on the boat nearly every weekend.

Thanks.

@trpsurf - I'm also a surfer by the way. One of the things I want to use the boat for is to anchor off Pt. Loma to catch some of those waves. I'll drop you an email, Huntington Harbor isn't that far away so I'd definitely like to come by and take a look.

my buddy who I expect will spend probably 6 out of every 10 trips on my dory with me is 6'7". He's a big dude. I had just intended to build an extended shelf and give him the v-berth. I'm only 5'9" so I fit most places, lol.
