New Lazarette Covers

Welcome back to "The Mountains" the Sierra Nevada. Now I guess it will start snowing again? We at Lake Tahoe still need it. Might not want it but still need it. :)

Joel - my comments may seem a little bit off topic, but perhaps not.
I can really sympathize with you over the lazarette covers. Those were the worst change the factory made and were done that way to cut costs. My 1999 model has the old covers which overlap the raised edges, and of course are water proof. But over the years I have made another modification which might be useful for owners of later models with two positive benefits: (1) real waterproof covers and (2) preservation of that nice gel coat. The lazarette covers tend to be places where people park gear getting into and out of the boat, at dock or on the trailer. Over time things will skid and scratch the gelcoat. Just can't be avoided. So I decided to protect mine with a low tech, yet attractive cover which anyone with modicum of skill can craft. My only concern was with the scratches, not preventing water from getting into the compartments. Even with your new hatches, you may consider what I did. Simply this is it. Using 3/16 Okumi plywood stained teak (combine dark walnut and red oak stain), scribe out a cover to fit your existing cover, cut with a scroll saw, finish with a good sealer and uv resistent outdoor kind of coating (marine varnish, polyurethane, etc.) on both sides and edges, and attach using 3M adhesive backed velcro strips. If your finish has too much shine, use 0000 steel wool to create a satin finish. The cover can quickly be removed and reattached (don't use too much velcro - a couple of strips will suffice) and you have protection and waterproofness . Will it blow off when trailering? Not in my experience. I have even cut out the wood to expose the latch to make access super easy, but that isn't really necessary. Occasionally refinishing the wood cover is no big chore, and if you don't want to spring for new covers, you can keep the water out with this system.

Thomas - photos? Sorry but my PC skills haven't advanced that far to put something like that on line. I really need some help. Joe, can you help me. I do have a digital camera. John

I got a set of the covers from Joel last week and installed them this afternoon. It took about a hour and a half and was as others have said a very simple upgrade. The covers are as everyone has said really nice and a major improvement over the stock covers. Thanks Joel

Somehow I slept through this thread. I'd love to remove those factory lazarette covers. Do you have any more, Joel? Gel coat color?

Dave

Sorry I just promised the last remaining set.... and in order for me to get a deal on them I have or buy 10 at a time, so I won't be ordering anymore.

I put on my set last week and it was on of the best cheap and easy upgrades that I have done. It only took a short hour to put both of them in. I was able to pull the old ones out after I removed the screws with one hand. just open and yank. I put the new ones in with 5200. They should never be coming out again.

Joel, I hope you will get enough interest to order again as I am interested in getting a set.

Thanks,
Warren

Dave, if one of us here in WA, buys a box of 10, it should be easy to find 5 boat owners interested and we could all but avoid the shipping cost. I may be interested, depending upon what the underside looks like. I have a tight clearance issue for a propane tank. Also, it would be nice to see if they make one that locks.

Steve if anything I think the new ones actually allow more clearance than the stock ones.

Capt. Steve... You bet...I will be pleased to help you buy them wholesale..There is a factory rep there in Seattle...and we can work with him if you would like.... I don't mark them up...and if he just needs a business to sell them to...you can sure do that with me...and have them shipped to you...what ever works best for you....I will be thrilled to "pass the ball" to you..

Propane tank... You asked the perfect question...cause I have one too...
and I am remodeling for a better system.... what I had..was a small squatty 1 1/2 gal. steel tank in the port side....worked fine...but I thought to small for long trips... and prone to rust no matter how much paint is on it.... and yes it did clear the cover just fine.. What I bought was one of those great plastic propane 2.5 gallons tank.. and I am going to cut a round hole in the bottom of the lazarette and insert a fiberglass insert that will go almost to the top of the tank... and glassing it in... then the tank will be in the insert...it will hold it well..and it will be easily removable...plus it will keep that lazarette properly sealed and vented...
I really enjoy having the propane system.. and in the future I am planning on adding a propane heater.

Ten covers should be easy enough. If we don't have 5 buyers, one or more of us could take 2 sets and pass the extra set on - or maybe someone else will speak up.

Could we do it through you, Joel, as you suggested, having it shipped to one of us to distribute? I propose we get the money in your hands in advance, so you don't need to do any accounting. You've been very generous to have done as much as you have already.

My choice is still white hull color.

Dave

I will be happy to do it... and have them shipped to you direct...not a problem... Yes..buy the white color.... I have one of the grey color...and it matches the grey well...but I have never sold a set...and I have sold over 50 sets...the white (I think) looks better on the boat. You won't have any problem selling the additional sets...as soon as folks see the new covers they always ask for a set... it's a real improvement....and doing it our way is over half price cheeper.

Let me know when you want em....and where you want em sent.
I had to charge tax to anyone I sold em to in California as they went through my books....but out of state..no tax...

Who else is up for the hull colored covers? You want them, Warren, right? Let's get it together. I need to either do it this week or wait 2 weeks after that, as I will be away. I don't mind holding a few, but would rather not have all.

Thanks, Joel.

Could anyone tell me how much bigger the opening might be? I have two batteries in my starboard side and it would be great to get a little more clearance. Michael

Joel, does the same company make a like cover that has a lock? Do they have a website? The main reason I would make the change is to gain a lock to secure my battery switch on one side and my storage on the other.
