New C-Dory 29'

Exactly. In this economic climate, I've seen Nordic 32's sold down to 118K. I must admit after taking multiple poundings from the mega-yachts (where was I when the mega-yachts were being passed out) in SW Florida, I have been tempted . . . (especially by the 26 Nordic).

You can buy a whole lot of boat (with a livable layout vs campable layout) for much less and cruise on the difference.

If c-dory really wanted to build a bigger boat with more room that reflexs the cdory style and still get it on a trailer then they should have asked me. for those of you who have seen the 27 pilot house that now lives is alaska you know the boat tht they should build. 27_pilothouse.thumb.jpg

This boat has a head, a dinning table that does not need to be converted for the co pilot to see out the front. the co-pilot gets a forward facing seat for two across from the captian. the table seats 4 or two with a lot of room. I love the upper lounge deck. couple of chairs and a bbq on the top deck :teeth Lots of room on the back deck to fish. I would think about mounting out boards like the 27 haileighs comet PICT0084.thumb.jpg

If c-dory would just build this i would buy a new boat. I will end up with a 25 some day but this is the boat I really want. only one that I know of and I have done a little searching around looking for another.
 
Pardon my Devil's Advocate position here, but it sounds like they've got a looooong way to go on this CD-29 project.

There's a lot of interior work to be done, and that will involve a lot of design and re-design time. And that just the placement of things, and then comes getting everything working, de-buged, and fully functional.

Then there's the hull design issues, like the half-tunnel performance and maneuverability along with the thruster design and workability.

And even as these issues are gradually solved, there'll be production problems that have to be solved, in getting things to fit and be watertight, like access panels in the floors, seams between the bulkheads and the hull, etc.

If you followed the development of the CD-25, the Tom Cat 255, and then the Ranger 25 Tug, you'd understand all of this.

The first few boats produced will be the "trial-run" in both testing the "final" design and production techniques.

In racing dinghy sailboats, one always didn't want to buy one of the first few boats out of the new molds, but wait until the major bugs were eliminated. With a much more complicated powerboat like this, the smart wait might be longer....

Still kinda looks like an Ospery 30 to me!

I had forgot about that 27 pilothouse. I looked for one of them as well a few years ago. Agreed, that is the boat they should build. Sadly, the design is probably tied up in the bad blood feud between the Tolands and it will never see the light of day.
 
Agreed about the 27 Pilothouse, although the interior could be redesigned a lot to more efficiently utilize the huge space inside.

I almost bought the boat (it was in Gig Harbor), and had arranged for a sea trial, when I finally decided that the CD-22 Cruiser's easy trailerability was more important than the plusses and minuses of the 27:

1.) extra room inside = +

2.) maintaining an inboard engine and an I/O drive vs. an O/B = -

3.) need for a new, larger tow vehicle = -

4.) the boat kinda looks like a couple of add-on projects stacked on a CD-27 hull, and a re-design could integrate the cabin structures into a more graceful deisgn that morre closely follows the C-D traditions. = -

It's still a great one-off custom design, however!

Agreed on the I/O, I will never own another one of those. It wouldn't be to hard for them to take the present 25, lengthen it two feet, and cap it with a pilothouse. They could use the same transom, so it would be outboard power and trailerable (same width). Still, I doubt it will ever see the sunshine, the whole thing just makes to much sense.
 
The sad part is that this boat came up for sale right after I picked up the SusanE. Now it just sits in alaska while the owner, nice guy, works for the goverment (ours) in africa. This boat needs to be put out on a rental plan. Great boat to cruise the north west in.

Can there be any doubt which one, the new 29' C-Dory or the 27' C-Dory Pilothouse, better reflects the C-Dory heritage?

Is there any rumors of an R-29? A 29' Ranger tug may make more sense than a CD-29.
 
At the Poulsbo TrawlerFest Ranger Jeff told me there was one in the works, a couple of years out. I think both companies are going to be building bigger boats in the years to come. I just hope they don't forget their roots.

Somewhere on this site is a preliminary drawing of a proposed 30 foot tug that they showed to some ppl at the SBS I think, 2 yrs ago... about... or something...

It is natural for companies to expand - stay away from the companies which contract, therein lies danger.

It appears that my wife and I are focusing on a CD-22, but we have been on many boats and for our budget (and time available - and distance to the water) it appears that the CD-22 will work best for now.

The CD-29 reminds me of the Camano 31 - We have been on the Camano 31 several times and, honestly, it's just a big living room that floats, with a forward berth and a forward sunken head. Camano has sold lots of these.

I think the CD-29 is preferable to a Camano 31 - not that I'm in the market for such a large craft currently. I like the layout and am sure that there are buyers for the 29.

Are those buyers us, or are those buyers outside of the current C-Dory buyer profile? Will the release of the new CD-29 bring new customers?

Analogy:
The Maybach 56 and 62 have sold well in the $300,000 range, taking buyers from rival ‘upscale’ manufacturers. Buyers who never would have purchased a $100,000+/- Mercedes Benz with it's 'average' accoutrements. They wanted more. The Maybach was created for a new customer base.

Are new Mercedes buyers just as happy as they were before the release of the Maybach? I think so.

Will new C-Dory buyers just as happy as they were before the release of the 29? Probably.

Time will tell, of course.

The boating marketplace ultimately determines the success of any new boat model launched. The 26' Tollycraft sedan, the 32' Bayliner motor yacht, and the 32'Nordic Tug are good example of successful boats have had long production runs. A few years ago at the Seattle Boat Show, C-Dory Marine had a 34' Olympic on display. As far as I know, C-Dory Marine only built one of these. At the 2007 Seattle Boat Show, I didn't notice any Olympic Boats in the C-Dory Marine booth.

The CD-29 might be geared toward someone considering a 30' Osprey or 30' SeaSport. I assume that this boat will be on display at the Lake Union Boat Show this fall.

It is not a rumor. Dave Livingston spread out the drawings for me on the table in the office at Ranger Boats on one of my visits when we still had a a contract for the R25. When / whether it will be built, that is anybody's guess. But it is designed, and it is major cool.

According to the Olympic boat company site, there is a 34. When you click on "Dealers" it leads to "C Dory Marine Group"--so I wonder if any Olympic boats are currently being built? Looking at used boats, there is an 1999 Orca Olympic--and there is a 2003 used 22 footer.
 
Bob , the Olympic molds lie dormant.They were built in the Monroe plant . About 5 years ago I went to Seattle[ just after Scot Reynolds bought C Dory] when they were still building them . The Orcas are much higher end boats and thats where they focused their energy .

I was told two years ago in a privae conversation with one of the factory folks at the SBSCBC, that they had purchased the Olympic line of boats, but were considering putting it to bed....

OK, David just telephoned, he was at Cap Sante in Anacortes putting around in his CD16, and saw the C-Dory 29 Venture in the water - the C-Dory folks are out in it right now, no doubt taking lots of pictures!
 
I was on the phone with the factory earlier today and was told that the boat was out today for sea trials and speed numbers. Hope to hear more in a day or so.
 
Good Evening Everyone:

I was at the helm of the 29 for most of the photo shoot. I am very pleased to report that she exceeded our expectations. She was very responsive, achieved an 18-20 MPH cruise at approximately 3100 RPM, and reached a top speed of 30.2 MPH, 4050 RPM while handling chop with ease. Now it's back to the factory for final adjustments and then she's off to our New Jersey dealer, Winter's Yacht Sales/Riverside Marina. Hulls #2 and #3 are now in production and I suspect #2 will be at Lake Union Sea Ray in time for the Lake Union Boats Afloat Show. Be sure and watch for an announcement from Lake Union Sea Ray and yes, we took lots of pictures for our new brochure, which we hope to post here soon.
