Hello all:

After visiting the SBS I am very interested in ordering a new 22 cruiser. I am thinking of outfitting as follows:

-Wallas 2 Burner
-Ritchie Compass
-Spare battery w/ switch
-Hightop
-Hydraulic steering
-Interior Hand Rails
-Shore Power (including battery charger)
-Tall Radar Arch
-Trim Tabs
-Anchor Deck Pipe
-Single Honda 90 EFI
-Furuno 1824C
-Icom IC-M422
-Humminbird HDR 610

What do you guys think about this setup? What would be a fair price? Any other options I should consider? Thanks so much, I look forward to hearing your opinions.

Aww, sorry, Tom... it's hard to let 'em go. You may be minus a windless, but look what a good young man you made!

I thought when I first bought the boat I wouldn't care for a windlass. Only after dropping anchor when it was pouring down rain more than once did I realize how much I am going to enjoy having a windlass. In addition, dropping anchor when it was freezing and not being able to feel my hands anymore wasn't too comfortable of a feeling. I guess if you don't plan on anchoring and will be mooring it isn't terribly important, otherwise I might think twice about that investment. :thup

dam spell check  the more he hung out with his freind the LESS work i was gettin out of him anyway.

no.no the more I use one the LESS winded I get.

Trust me, if you are going to do any overnights on the hook, get the windlass. It takes anchoring and hauling anchor from a ugly chore if the weather is bad to just a touch of the switch and your done.

We plan on anchoring out some, but a lot of the use will be going from Anacortes to our cabin on Decatur Island, so I'll think about the windlass. Does anyone know how much it costs from the factory? Or how much it would cost to add on later? Without that option I have gotten a quote of around 56k for that boat, before any incentives or negotiations. Any idea of how much I should expect to pay?

Your set up sounds good. I might go with the 24" 4 KW radar unit for only a few hundred dollars more. The descrimination of the radar will be better.

I would put in a fish finder--either the black box of the Furuno or a separate unit. Although you don't necessarilly fish, the fish finder shows a lot more about the bottom than a digital depth finder, and is well worth the few extra dollars and room it takes. The fish finder shows bottom type, structure, slope, @ of shoaling etc.

Check and see if you really need the high top, and why you want the high radar arch. If you need them, then they are worth getting, but if you don't, I don't think they add a lot to the boat.

You might consider camper canvas in the PNW, or at least the cover over the cockpit. This is the "mud room" which I consider esential in that area.

The factory pricing for the 25 windlass with bow pulpit are about $1600. You can get the windlass and bow roller for about $800, add in another $200 for wire and breaker. Then you would not need the $180 deck plate.
We didn't have a windlass on our 22, but do on the 25 and 255. As we age, the windlass becomes almost an essential for us.

Can an inflatable dinghy fit under the low radar arch? I agree that the high top may not be necessary, especially since the tallest person in the family is 5'11". Thanks for all the help guys, I really appreciate it.

What David said. If you are going to anchor, get a windlass, period. Factory option or you self-install, if you are good at that kind of stuff. We had Les install the windlass on our CD22, the CD25 had the windlass as standard equipment at the 2005 SBS (sorry for the TLA, check that other thread!). No way are you going to want to be out on the bow manually deploying or retrieving the anchor if you anchor up more than extremely occasionally.

I would add another 'vote' (seems appropriate today) for the windlass. I never had one before this boat, didn't order one for it either. 2nd time out we were trying to retrieve the anchor in wind and some chop, downright dangerous with these boats with their light front end and cabin, they tend to swing back and forth quickly, which requires great skill in bringing in the anchor in those conditions -- not to mention the safety hazard risk. I really like my windlass, one of the top 3 best items on my boat.

Talking about avoiding the hazards of working on the foredeck by getting a windlass brings to mind Bob's screed  regarding not using the windlass to hold the line while anchoring, but instead snubbing off the anchor line with a running hitch attached to the boat tow eye. I get the heebie-jeebies thinking of the contortions and safety issues one would encounter doing this. So it was with much relief that I found that most of the Brats that I polled at the SBS rely on the windlass alone to hold them to their anchor.

I'm still somewhat hesitant to spend the money on the windlass before trying out hauling the anchor myself. I am 18, and will be cruising mostly with my dad, so I will be hauling the anchor. I feel like it is something that I should at least try doing before spending $1600...

And does anyone know what kind of deal I can expect on the boat? Obviously we want to be fair with the dealer, but we also don't want to pay too much.

Also, any advice on a fishfinder? The integrated Furuno unit is about $800, which seems steep. Perhaps we could get another brands (Garmin, Lowrance, Humminbird?) GPS/FF combo for about that same price, which would double as a backup GPS and be reasonably priced. I want to avoid ordering the boat with more than we will use.

Finally, does anyone know if the electric wipers and hydraulic steering are now standard on the 22? There seems to be some conflicting information about this. Thanks again!

You may have a good point here, after you pull that anchor a few times you will really appreciate the windlass. Mine was $850 plus $189 for self launching bow roller installed at Wefing. I wouldn't consider going without a windlass now that I have one. You should be able to get a much better deal at the time of purchase than adding it later. If roof top air is somewhere in the future you'll want the high top model.
